The greatness of up/down is that recommendations are simpler, though arguably reddit's recommendation system doesn't work... so, I'm on board .Slashdot moderation!!

Doesn't Digg do this, or is it just the fact that high ranking Digg people have more followers who want to "help out"? Giving people more power makes it break much quicker. You'll soon see upvotes being sold, etc, etc, etc.

I don't think flash would be necessary, though I guess it's potentially easier to collect a lot of data... What about creating it into an ultimate medieval tower defense? Perhaps a machine learning War Craft II. I don't know.

This could be the start of something really really neat, especially if people have time to work on it.

I'm not happy working, but I enjoy doing research, learning and tinkering so it seems like a good fit for me. There were a few reasons why I dropped out, none of which were because I didn't like what I was doing.

Oh, perfect. I missed it. I would expect to see something like this on the page for the utility though. Maybe in a section, "Find out how you can call this utility from your programs!" This is a great site. I look forward to seeing it's pro

One possible feature is to create a web service interface to using the utilities, maybe over XML-RPC or something.

Punk/Hardcore (bands like Bane, Paint it Black, Modern Life is War, Good Clean Fun, Minor Threat, Gorilla Biscuits) mostly, with some Pink Floyd and Violent Femmes thrown in there for good measure.

I don't really see how this is much different from my.reddit.com, but I could be missing something... EDIT: sorry, I jumped the gun before I started reading more of the discussion. I look forward to seeing what comes out of it.

I'm a bit skeptical of this. If you need horizontal space, how do you structure your navigation? A horizontal list of elements such as the ones news.yc use's could be considered tabs, no? How else _could_ that navigation even be structured?

I can't help but confuse http://mint.com with Shaun Inman's http://haveamint.com/ when I see coverage of mint.com. Inman's mint was first, but mint.com's name is more fitting...

I like to read his essays on paulgraham.com better anyway. Having to check both feeds (you use the unofficial rss feed for pg.com right?) was just annoying.

Right. But still a contest nonetheless. See my reply above.

Since when does a contest have to have a fixed number of winners? Having a startup to begin with is a contest; a contest against oneself and the company's rivals. In essence, you are accepting people to contend, and those applying are conte

I think they should hold out to R5.98RS personally, fix a few more of the things that people complain about and perhaps hit 75 YES votes. There's obviously still room for improvement.

I've always been under the impression that nofollow doesn't really matter if you're linking to your own site and then redirecting. However, I can't seem to find support to back up this claim... Edit: I noticed Hacker News direct links. But

if by Lisp you mean Scheme, perhaps http://magic.xmog.com suits you. It's lacking documentation, but it's promising at least.
