Fair point, I'd forgotten that. If only they'd released NetHack for PS3, it would have run in the background easily ;-)

1. Who knows what data Google is giving back in return? 2. Neither want a monopoly. A duopoly is far more resistant to regulation. 3. Many business will advertise on multiple channels. So long as they edge out the others it's fine by t

It wasn't great though - it didn't use spare cycles. It had to be started and run exclusively. If they baked it in to use cycles when games were paused for instance or made it switch to FAH instead of powering off, it could have b

FAANG is just a buzzword acronym, a hook to pull in investors. LinkedIn is Microsoft, which should also be included given it's scale. It should be FAMANG.

True with enough redundancy it's fine, and if they have special terms with SG such as free replacements and heavy discounts then it's little wonder they use so many. Myself though, for SoHo use, I'm willing to pay more for le

Seagate do an 'archive' HDD, but with only a 3-year warranty I wouldn't expect it to work as a long term solution.

I wonder if that's a characteristic of streaming a single file, consecutive blocks. That's be really strange behaviour though. Perhaps a thermal issue if the TV keeps it powered and spinning all the time? Certainly Xbox seems to k

This. Vbox won’t run if Hyper-V is enabled, and Docker / WSL2 won’t work without Hyper-V. True for me on vbox 6.0.14, it just crashes the VM with a cryptic error. Workaround is not easy, hyper-v had a different feature set for network

What’s the obsession with maxing out? Anything can be made expensive. It’s just gold-plating. What about ranking price versus the recommended spec for a given task; this would give a better sense of value.

It makes web pages like HN dark (in FF). I don't get why it takes so long to do it though, so toggling it is frustrating, and the side effects are pretty horrific as it throws boxes around everything.

Dark mode turns laptops into mirrors, especially if they are glossy. Any office that has overhead tube lights is a poor match for dark mode apps. I even go with light terminal schemes in this case, and I have a strong preference towards dar

I wanted one of these when I first spotted it, but in hindsight it would be too dependent on software to work and I'd probably end up spending ages setting it up when the right thing to do would be to get blank key caps.

I have one device which is USB-C - a mouse. In what world is a mouse better with USB-C? As for CD drives, the world moved on to bluray and that has a licensing cost as well as not fitting with the iTunes strategy of rent-and-never-own. Appl

Also the SD-card reader. That was a deal breaker for me, I use these as much as USB keys. I use a laptop with a reader, the card is flush (not sticking out) and it's a great way of expanding storage. It's also the best way of gett

This is a solved problem now. It no longer does the restart thing (or hasn't for a long time). It gives a 7-day pause option too. The two things that break Windows are spaces-in-filenames, and max-filepath-length. Urgh. MacOS is broken

The other aspect of design that needs to be taken into account is the size of the tap area - you don't have to make the buttons huge, but the responsive area should be larger for younger audiences and with more spacing between controls.

Is there a way of stopping accidental taps on the lower part of the screen? Android is bad for this, with back/home buttons in the corner. Perhaps some sort of elasticated non-capacitive fabric barrier wrapped around the device that can be

Perhaps they mean WebKit. Oh wait, that's not just Android. They don't even spell the name of their own stats package right in the article: StartCounter? StatCounter? Also, anything called Phandroid is likely to be slightly biased.
