Be careful your marketing department isn't a bunch of mindless jerks that will be first against the wall when the revolution comes. Share and enjoy!

Being as generous as possible and without other context, I would interpret that as a request for some background info you trust that they could use to catch up on those concepts in their own time without derailing the meeting by getting y

I will pay for exterior painters - the cost to my own state of mind with painting a house is too high. I will glady do harder jobs than painting myself, but nothing pisses me off more than painting for some reason.

I also hate Christmas for similar reasons. Choosing gifts that don't feel like giving unnecessary junk/clutter is very hard and stressful. It has got a bit easier as I get older and the circle shrinks a bit, plus usually we only g

Yeah, but you were refuting someone pointing out why that was with the difference between a later green field system in a smaller problem space that could learn from earlier systems vs one with a lot of extra use cases pulling in different

As someone who dealt with Java and Python 20yrs back, I don't think Java is a valid comparison. Java had a terrible or non existent OS integration story - it didn't even try to have OS native stuff. It was it's own separate i

My quieter corners of usenet were still usable/valuable up until 10-15yrs ago. I miss it too, but aren't quite sure how much of that is rose tinted nostalgia.

LTO is one of the best choices for compatibility. I remember just how awful DDS (same sort of media as DAT) tape backups were - due to differences in head alignments, it was a real lottery as to whether any given tape could be read on a dif

Our wedding rings are titanium. The engineering geek in me loves it for nerdy reasons, and the metal allergies in my wife love it for other reasons.

That's the one! As a kid back then, I had no idea who he was but later in life would always recognise his name from that book.

The limits of my experience with his work was a tongue in check overview of early 80s arcade games and the players. He painted them as defenders of earth against an alien onslaught.

A counterpoint: Speaking for myself who had also been mildly depressed since teenage years, it didn't kick off into actual breakdowns and medication until after having kids. Previously it was probably so mild it wouldn't have coun

I'm probably mistating my "never felt" earlier. At the time it was the common assumption for those on slashdot (incl me) who had heard all the soundbites but not actually read it. It was only a bit later I realised it was abo

The 42S was my calculator as a structural engineering student in the early 90s. I now regularly use the Android version of Free42 - I should try and find my old manuals though, so I could operate it as well as I used to.

They did have something like that for the original A1000 intended to do just that. Sidecar I think it was called? Something with an x86 for running DOS apps.
