I agree with the sentiment of the post and the replies. Yet your examples hint at something more. Those massive failures are by people not by tech. Mismanagement and incompetence and systems designed to obfuscate accountability. Which happe

Yea “tap to edit” is what I meant. But who knows how many past (mis)recognitions vs manual edits it takes to reform Siri. I’d try to do it each time, hopefully won’t take too long to get it. (On iOS 14, enable Siri - Siri Responses - Always

I’m a sort of machine learning scientist applying and explaining classical ML models on tabular data to generate insights, and have done lots of research on disciplines in data science. I think by now, we should recognize that data science

As a huge fan of tidyverse, I have to agree. Tidy eval is anything but. However, once they get that right, then tidyverse is close to perfection I think the newish “interpolation” syntax with double braces {{ }} is getting there.

Indeed. `library(tidyverse)` and I’m set for like 70-80% of use cases for data manipulation, exploratory data analysis, and statistics. Though to be complete, any ML project means python and scikit learn.

Totally. In apple's own back yard, SF, business hours are too often totally out of whack, that you have to confirm in Google Maps each time. And I am biased towards Apple Maps for privacy and usability reasons

Indeed, good suggestion. The tension is with standing out, culturally and otherwise. If what you do is outside the norm, you are “different” and “difficult to work with”. But yea, doing the right thing is more important!

Here is Apple’s calculus: What fraction of unsigned app openings, across the entire world each and every day, are safe? If 99% of these events are unsafe, then such an experience seems warranted, given real malware and security threats. The

But can you lead in (2) without being good at (1)? If you train on limited data, then your inferences will be of poor quality, even if they have low latency. So in sum, it seems you can't be a leader in ML without both.
