This is completely untrue. The recruiter will be trying to push their client's rate up, while simultaneously keeping your rate as low as possible. They might say something like "our commission is x% of the final rate", but you'll typically

Start gathering them. Seriously, if you're working on $YADDA_YADDA, then obviously there should be some justification for it, either to yourself or your manager. That's what you need to get down, stuff like: improved response times by x%, k

Hence the line about people being pushed to the outskirts. Now hunter-gathering is a subsistence lifestyle. Back before agriculture it was a very different story, since there would have been hunting in the most productive lands, too. Fos

> Civilization is what is necessary to avoid periodic famines. There's a reason the hunter-gather existence fell out of favor. It's only an idyllic lifestyle to people who haven't really thought about it. Not actually true. Most hunter-

This is for alphadogg (I can't reply directly to his post). You've been hellbanned, for this post bagging Edward Tufte: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2991211 Which doesn't seem worth a hellban, and you seem a reasonable guy, so I th

Sounds like you've arranged things so that you're "on" 24/7, or close to it. That's definitely a trigger - in my experience, at least. It looks like you're getting less than 6 hours sleep too, particularly with an 8 month old. You could try

I'm not trivialising it, and I'm sorry you took it that way. It's quite possible that you were on the path to burnout, but what you were describing is not burnout, and I wish people would stop calling "burnout!" when they just need a holida

I've seen all three triggered by overwork, chronic background stress and/or adrenal fatigue. Perhaps it's not an official disorder, but burnout is frequent enough in IT that it probably should be.

Partly from watching other people go through it, partly from getting close to it myself a few times. I recently finished writing a book, while working full time and helping to run my wife's web business. Oh and two kids. I just got back fro

Have you thought about hiring a bookkeeper or accountant to help out? Not being valued by clients can make you feel pretty shitty, but it's amazing what a regular "When can we expect payment?" call will do. There are other tricks you can us

I find this pretty offensive - if you get over it in three days , it's not burnout. You just needed a holiday. I'm all for raising awareness of it, but using "burnout" in this context trivialises it. I've seen friends struggling with burno

Just a note for hezekiah - you've been hellbanned (as of http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2751543 ). Not sure why - and from looking at your comment history prior to your ban you seem like a reasonable person, so I thought I'd let you k

The landing page is definitely a better place to send people to than Amazon, at least until you get the TOC issues sorted out. And you probably want to expand the book description on Amazon too - currently it's only a couple of sentences.

Really? I have showdead, and rarely see hellbanned people. When I do, it's normally pretty obvious from their comment history why they got there. UPDATE: did a quick scan through a couple of recent articles and only found two hellbans (as o

I took a quick look at your ebook - $50 seems pretty steep, particularly when I can't view more than the first page, and I don't know how many pages there are. A table of contents would definitely help know what the book's about. Also, it'

Well really, what's the point in calling it a factory? In Ruby or Python everything is an object, every method or function call returns an object, hence everything is a factory, and the term loses its meaning. In this particularly case Im

Except that a lot of patterns tend to be language specific. So while it does teach you patterns, sort of - the patterns here are unlikely to be of any use, since they won't be usable if you're writing Python, and if you're writing Java or C
