It works the way that most open source third party libraries do: There'll initially be some hacked together stuff, then a couple of contenders will emerge, copying each other's features. After the dust has settled there'll be a few decent l

Virtualenv isn't a hack. How else would you run multiple different versions of Python or a library?

Yeah, I goggled a bit at that one too. Particularly when it's immediately followed by a complaint about things being modified unexpectedly. Some of the complaints are not really issues, eg. you can comment out loops by adding an "if 0:" aft

Sometimes your problem space is really just that complex, in which case there's not much you can do, short of writing some sort of business rules engine.

I find that it's a problem with most languages. Beyond a certain point a project will start to need infrastructure, documentation, code style guidelines and tests - especially when there's more than one developer. My personal preference is

I find that the best way to fix this is to write your program as a library, then the part that you're supposed to run as a script which imports and runs it. No __underscore__magic__ required.

The way I would do it is to push the processing out to functions, too. Something like: verdict = get_verdict(the_thing) if verdict not in blessedsolutions: return I'd advise against running returns onto the same line - I find

I find that it's not so much a balanced distribution of numbers, but that you don't have to cash in 4 for 1 for a resource that you need. Also, you don't need a deck of dice - just draw on an old pack of cards with a permanent marker :)

If the luck element bothers you, just use a deck of 36 cards, numbered from 2-12: 1x2, 2x3, 3x4, etc. (Either draw your own on a deck of cards or use two decks of playing cards). Shuffle, and deal from the top instead of a dice roll. When t

There are plenty of cases where immigration can be negative, particularly in the short term, so controlling the amount of immigration makes sense. In the case of corn subsidies you can argue that the political process has been derailed in f

Your analogy doesn't hold. San Jose is not a country, and it has no legal right to prevent US citizens from entering its borders. If (eg.) more people enter than its hospitals or roads can comfortably handle, then it can appeal to the Feder

I think the idea was to spend a little bit of time/effort on each of the causes responsible for your issue. Over time, causes which need more fixing will crop up again and again and on average you'll spend the right amount of time on each o
