Email and face to face communication are completely different beasts though, particularly for tougher issues.

I think the point that's missed (especially by you) is that proprietary, closed source software is fundamentally more insecure than open source. As a user of proprietary software, you can't inspect that code for bugs and you can't inspect i

> “Don’t comment bad code—rewrite it.” That's advocating against bad code, and specifically the fairly widespread practice of commenting what it does rather than fixing it. It's not a blanket statement against comments in general.

It depends on how many copies have been sold, and what the support costs are likely to be. If he's only sold two copies, then it's not going to be worth packaging it up.

The other thing that crossed my mind is that Google is still making use of the books - I doubt that just making them available publicly is part of their plan. If they're also licensing them for spelling correction and translation, how does

No idea myself - Sam Harris had some choice words about the degeneration of online debate a few days ago: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4358376

It's not specifically publicity or advertising though, is it? They're indexing the entire text and making that available publicly.

No I don't, otherwise I wouldn't have submitted it. The author has some good points on a hard problem - the nature of public internet debate combined with the permanency of the internet, is killing off debate in favour of soundbites.

Why is $750 per book so outrageous? Books on average would make far more than that, so it doesn't seem completely out of the question.

Compared to zero hours for a more traditional editor like TextMate or Sublime Text 2 that has command-S as save? Sure is. Also, at the point that you first pick up an editor like Vim, you have no idea whether it's going to work for you, so

Er, they're not cheaper - at least here in Australia: http://www.virginmobile.com.au/mobile-data-plans/ Neither of the major players here, Telstra or Optus, seem to do prepaid data, although they're in the same ballpark for postpaid: htt

No, you go look it up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_B12#Foods . What's the top source of B12 on that list? Now, given that you're not eating beef liver, which liver do you think is providing all that B12? Stupid. Dangerous. Edit:

Your b12 will be up because your body is cannibalising its tissues to stay alive. That's your liver, kidneys, etc. and it doesn't mean that you're healthier. Given that you don't know that, and earlier on you didn't know what ketosis is, I

Eating nothing for three weeks?! That's stupid and dangerous. You're putting your life at risk from heart attack and kidney and liver failure (and other people's, judging from your comments in this thread).

I'm not sure what you mean by an "instance", but there will likely be variations in how quickly people respond to metabolism, and also depends on what you're eating during the fast. One possible mechanism is that the muscles of the people f

I think it depends on how much glucose and carbohydrates you're getting in your diet. Your body needs a minimum level to survive (eg. for brain function) and if it doesn't get it, it converts fat. So if you're on a low carb diet, but gettin

I've just read forward a couple of comics, and there's some amazing stuff in there. Just finished reading about Matthew Henson and how he was first to the north pole. It's like xkcd, but for history instead of maths/physics/CS.

Mental activity requires a lot of glucose, whereas muscles can run on fat, protein or glucose. Additionally, people are adapted to minimise their mental output. So if you're low on blood glucose, producing a lot of mental output for >6

All the liaising in the world is not going to help you when all the developers who use your platform think that you're an asshole, or you're too busy managing your ad portfolio to pay attention to them.

It's a facet of marketing, sure - but you're marketing your platform/API/library/company to developers, not the general public. It doesn't really matter whether they're currently using your system, since they might be in the near future. Th

"Developer relations" normally implies a role intended to encourage developers to use your platform. If they're just going to parrot the company line, then there's not much point in them existing, is there?
