Nobody updates their old products nowadays. At least they haven’t abandoned the app support for those cameras and continue to expand the APS-C line.

Sony recently added support for webcam-over-usb to a lot of their cameras, apparently. And they are known for video quality and good lenses. So that’s $700-800 for a very good camera (new) that also works as webcam. https://suppo

One of the best smartphones of all time. Somehow I found its first firmware (2.7.x?) much more usable than the 3.x to which it auto-updated. Particularly seems to be caused by lawsuits that led to removal of slide-to-unlock—like function.

One of the limiting factors for modeling bokeh and flare-like effects is dynamic range limitation. You need extreme HDR capturing to accurately reproduce these effects, as they often play the largest part with bright, especially colored, li

Sony made steps in this direction with ILCE-QX1, and with their current compact full-frame ILC progress they could decide to reboot that product line. Would be interesting to have a compact photo/video powerhouse out of that lens-style

Basically by convincing them that to make "the real AI" work, they would need a lot of high-quality data that they wouldn't be able to produce. After several iterations with less data-hungry statistical methods they finally r

This is a great insight. My company recently started working with agricultural analysts, and your example about moving averages is spot on. Initially, they also wanted the “magic” of NNs, and fortunately, after several prototypes, they unde

I'd suppose it doesn't need zero downtime outside of some well-defined business hours. Actually most of things don't and I think would even benefit from planned monthly 5hr outage instead of unplanned 10hr once per year.

I suppose the boring business model needs some secret sauce, i.e. advanced technology, to stay competitive -- since it's boring, many people are likely to do it, the margins are thin, you need to optimize.

I work in a lab which publishes in both CS and biology journals. Biologists require Word. Most our people hate it more than LaTeX, since in LaTeX it is at least difficult to break the template accidentally. Often the writing starts in GDocs

Flash is the Delphi of the web. It was trivial to code a complex native GUI app in Delphi 7 with VCL, and now it's effectively gone, not quite replaced by Qt with its overcomplicated C++ nature.

I usually do the inverse: who knows what additional data we'll want to store for each row, let's put there a jsonb column, store anything not clearly critical there, and add columns or tables as these jsons get populated and used.
