The hash will change depending on how the file is broken down into chunks and and a different hash can be used for multiple versions of the same file. I expected to be able to compute a hash and see whether the file is in the IPFS network;

That is part of why FF is having user drops. There should be a way to easily set a bunch of preferences in bulk for privacy/security or whatever one wants.

Aren't both XMPP and matrix networks decentralized? XMPP has been around since 1999 according to wikipedia. It is my understanding that providers could keep metadata/logs about accounts involved.
