Dear downmodders, the submitter should have at least put the fig leaf of an "Ask HN" sentence around this to make this interesting. Otherwise, a post to the homepage of a 12-yr old project makes no sense and is polluting HN.

I stand corrected wrt Redhat's ownership of KVM. Thanks for the clarification. I re-read some more web pages in the light of your comments, and I remain unconvinced that nerd pride wasn't at the root of the Linux kernel devs dismissal of Xe

Dear downvoter, in case it wasn't clear, the IEEE and ACM both have elected officials. I was suggesting he run for office within the IEEE or ACM, not for public office. Thanks.

Xen is a classic example of a technology and company that never reached its full market potential due to nerd pride. In this particular case, Redhat/Linus/kernel hacker's obstinate refusal to add it to the stock kernel. They exhibited NIH a

Weak article. I thought he would talk about some more examples. And then talk about the difficulties in learning a library vs. rolling your own. Easy-to-copy code (MD5) was copied. Well duh. Lots of people have talked here about the difficu

I tried Mac for some time and LOVED LOVED the lack of crapware, but I found it overrated: 1. Blurry text :) 2. iLife apps are nicely approximated by Windows Live. Before I checked out Windows Live Movie Maker, I was very impressed with

Thanks for the clarification. So the video files are directly hosted by the CDNs? OK, in that case, Amazon can't get insight into Netflix by gathering network statistics.

Their recommendation engine is a key strength. I LOVE it. Second, at <$10/mo, the cost is not high enough to make bother with switching. I would rather pay $10/mo have the best streaming experience than pay $6/mo have a second-rate

I'm pretty sure getting data about # of bytes transferred on a hourly basis from Netflix's instances would be valuable to estimate # of movies viewed. Further subdividing the flow by (src, dst) IP will give a good idea about # of minutes wa

See my comment above. You're confusing outsourcing, offshoring, and offshore outsourcing.

PSA: outsourcing, offshoring, and offshore outsourcing are all different things. What the WSJ article was describing is offshoring.

Doctors and hospitals bill you more if you're uninsured. TFA mentions this as one of the reasons to get a high-deductible plan in which you will be paying most of the cost out of pocket.

Can you explain how continuations apply here. I don't really have a good idea about that. Wrt setjmp/longjmp, I think the key differences are the lack of a 'setjmp' and that you don't have to pass in the setjmp buffer down the calls. If you

This is the sort of law that I thought only existed in sclerotic zero-sum societies: stupid laws that exist to be selectively applied to harass people. Either repeal it or enforce it. Reminds me of the USSR. Note, just like this "socialist"

Aren't you the same guy that was "ecstatic" that Apple was taking a 30% cut of subscription revenue? Here you're worried about Amazon's easily-replaced static file hosting service, while having no problems becoming 100% dependent for key pa
