I use emacs because it's competent as a text editor and doesn't try to be more than that. It works well in conjunction with other Unix style tools. It's hackable enough to have various plugins built for it that I need to use

There's a difference in the kind of things that proof assistants like Coq can do and what computer algebra systems like Sage can do. One can still use CAS like Sage to prove things and not just do numerical computations, but it's

I don't beileve that this is nearly as good as the Greek chorus on this forum says it is. As long as you can see a ship with your eyes, a missile can probably hit it.

It's not really fair to call fractal dimension a real spatial dimension- the sierpinski triangle is still a 2d object but the fractal dimension (a heuristic metric) is 1.58

I don't trust this study. They have no reason to suspect childhood obesity is caused by exhaust fumes and they don't have any explanation. It also says that the cause "isn't likely to be variations in diet." As a fo

All they did is train a neural network to recognize flies. they haven't replicated the nervous system of a fly. To say they "built a fly brain" is wrong because that actually has been done for nematodes and it's differen

This obviously worked as a fundraising stunt, but the technology is not new. I recall seeing other people doing this on TV and a few weeks ago some rapper did it on an Instagram live stream.

Strange that they would need the source code. I would think that it should be easy to figure out what encryption algorithm it uses by looking at the binary if it wasn't blatantly advertised anyway.

Most people wouldn't think that there's anything immoral about private companies using strategy to be better than their competitors as long as they do it through legitimate means. Why should we hold states to a different standard?

IIRC, the only reason mathcomp isn't in the Coq standard library is because the license isn't free.

I get the feeling that Ubuntu is basically a finished product. What major changes would you have expected to see if Canonical had more money? The only thing I can think of is to replace the god awful default text editor. I noticed they chan

There is an algorithm to construct a polynomial over GF(2) of several variables in algebraic normal form that generates an arbitrary sequence when the variables are incremented like a radix-2 binary number. In other words: these are polynom

This bug only effects proofs that use types with more than 256 constructors. Also, it involves a command that is meant to optimize proofs so it isn't neccessary to ever use it. Personally, I still trust the implementation despite this

I find it very interesting to see how experienced Coq programmers prove things. I have enough experience to know how deliberate there choices have to be.
