Congrats! But how nobody analysed this bug for 8+ years is a bit of a mystery to me...

What, your ISP already mines data about you and sells it? If I knew that about mine I would leave it ASAP.

One could argue that even those in the USA do not understand or cannot avoid these risks, making them (as you said) "vulnerable to unprecedented levels of tyranny".

In light of PRISM I would argue that the opposite is true: "the ability / freedom to not be connected is a human right".

I can't believe this is not a top comment anymore. I don't have enough experience with Ruby to comment about it, but as far as Java is concerned, people (myself included) are still complaining it is slooooooooo... <let me pau

This bit sums my experience with Twisted nicely: "...[the available docs] are either aimed at absolute beginners or at experienced Twisted users." I was highly frustrated trying to find any useful docs on Twisted. This is where I

This could also mean that jQuery is becoming such a standard that nobody bothers to mention it explicitly. Does anyone remember PrototypeJS and mooTools?

Because at some point in time mySQL was widely installed with all providers, and PostgreSQL wasn't. I guess it was just a bit sooner adoption-ready, and that counted.

If you want to link your proprietary software to GPL-ed MySQL, you can't. They used to sell (expensive) licenses if you wanted to do that. I know because I wanted to use it this way and was forced to use SQLite instead (which performed

Wow, good job! But as you said, given that you didn't use any frameworks the productivity couldn't have been that great... Not to mention that it probably doesn't blend in with the native apps? (don't have a mobile with

Actually, I would argue that their information is VERY relevant. Humans make the same mistakes / crimes / ... over and over and over again. I am quite sure that Columbus approached the natives with gifts, and look where it ended.

That doesn't really matter. If a girl refuses to go out with you, she might not be in a position where she can make an informed decision. And she is possibly depriving her future children of a magnificent father, condemning them to lif

I have succesfully run Xen on 2 of their root servers for 3-4 years (with 5 to 8 virtual machines on each), ending this episode only recently (not because of technical difficulties). There were some occasional problems with Xen itself (some

I seem to recall a research by Google which concluded that stress is not really an important factor in disk reliability... Can't find a link now though. Of course, that doesn't make parent's claim any more true; just pointing

Both disks failing at the same time might indicate that the problem is with the controller or cables. One of our disks (at Hetzner) died on us a few months ago and unearthed an issue with backups. :( Because of missing data we asked for a d

Don't account to malice what can be accounted to incompetence. :) If MS acquired Nokia it would sink only lower, and MS knows it, that's why they killed the deal.

If NSA could subpoena Google, they can (and probably do) do the same with DDG. Not that I don't wish them success, but PRISM is not the right reason to switch search engine to them.

I wanted to say that your answer really doesn't address what the parent was saying, but I see your point now... Integral part of GPL is the ability for users to change their software, and Apple doesn't allow that (both for the rea

It is there - if the phone is not locked when you receive the call. Otherwise you have to press power button twice to reject. That hasn't changed from iOS6.

Exactly. Also, as they are becoming more similar to Android, it won't take much for users to actually switch to it. I am sure Google is happy to see this development.

Depends on how you do it. You can download an existing VMWare image (don't use VirtualBox for this - the guest will be slow, not sure why) and run it in minutes. Just be sure NOT to allow it any access to network, unless you are willin

I love VirtualBox and I think it beats VMWare and others in UX department anytime. That said, for running Mac (Hackintosh) I would STRONGLY recommend VMWare. On VirtualBox I have tried 3 (!) different images and they were all slow, while th
