Please do not use scons in your projects. Poorly written SConstructs are as common as poorly written Makefiles, and are more difficult to patch to work correctly because of all the magic that goes on under the hood. SCons has many issues

Manpages are written in troff: https://manpages.bsd.lv/ This means that they can be converted to PostScript or PDF. There’s no portable way to do this with the “man” command, but on most Linuxes you can use “man -t” and on

Mandoc, the default manpage formatter in OpenBSD, Illumos, Minix, and some Linux distributions, does semantically parse manpages. The latest version even uses less’s tags functionality to allow jumping to flag definitions. For example, if I

Discussions of copyleft versus permissive licensing always seem to cover the same “freedom for users versus freedom for developers” clichés and the same tired slavery metaphors. My dislike of copyleft is emphatically not because I want to e

To be fair, the piece remixed in that video is one of the only “traditional” musical tracks in the game, and I think the remix works pretty well. But I share your concerns: I hope that the later parts of the game, where music is replaced wi

In practice --help output is mostly useless—it’s neither simple enough for a quick overview nor comprehensive enough to actually know what I can do. Tried “less --help” lately? It spits out ten pages of output! Plus, every program does --he

Other problems I encounter with Github‐generated tarballs: most projects that use Autoconf don’t keep the generated configure script in the repository, so the Github tarball has a build dependency on autoconf (as opposed to tarballs generat

It’s instructive to see how different MathML is from other math markup languages. Here’s the quadratic formula: In troff, x = {-b +- sqrt { b sup 2 - 4ac}} over 2a In TeX, x = {-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}} \over {2a} In plain Unicode, 𝑥 = (−𝑏 ±…

Theo mentions anoncvs. Remember, there was no Github in 1996. Not even SourceForge. Source code was passed around via tarballs, and you couldn’t look at individual commits without an account on the development server hosting the repository.
