"Shlimazl" sounds to me like it could be translated pretty easily into Japanese: 「ついていない」. The phrase uses no noun, though, so would that disqualify it? I get sick of hearing foreigners going on about how there's no translation of the word

This looks good, too. I especially like the fact that it tells which words are "Common word"s.

Thanks for the link! Somehow I'd never come across that site before (I guess because I've got a good densi jisyo. The only times I check out words online is when I want more context; in which case I go to the Japanese Wikipedia). The ques

I should probably double-check this with a Japanese first, but I think the words 「強盗」 and 「略奪」 don't mean "looting" in the sense of people snatching whatever they can from stores after a disaster. My (possibly incorrect) understanding is t

It was pretty amazing. I couldn't call or text anyone for quite some time after the quake, but the internet connection was totally unaffected. I was talking to people around the world on Facebook, and even made some phone calls through gm

Not to nitpick too much, but I do believe what you're calling a "kami-dana" is actually a "butsudan". The "kami-dana" is shinto, and the "butsudan" is Buddhist, and you keep them in separate rooms, from my understanding (although I don't d

I really doubt anyone ever claimed the disaster at Bangiao was just an unfortunate incident. Who doesn't bash China for their blatant disregard of human life? Not that I disagree with your point.

You're assuming I picked the Lambourghini for it's brand name value. I could have said "Volvo" but I didn't. Substitute "Volvo" for "Lambourghini" if you like and you'll get eh same point---a manufactured good will not become free by remo

To whoever downvoted this: I think eyeforgotmyname was saying it was ironic considering Einstein worked in a patent office , not that he thought Einstein should have been able to patent it. It was a joke. You were supposed to laugh.

Not so easy in the world of drugs or other manufactured goods. You can't torrent a factory, trained labourers, a distribution system, etc. And you can't torrent the finished product, either. If IP laws disappeared tomorrow, I wouldn't be

Any published work is copyrighted by default. Are you aware of Chomsky making any effort to keep his books out of people's hands? Has he sued anyone for copying or distributing his books?

My deeply-ingrained image of the Ugly American get the better of me here. I actually thought you were serious until halfway through the post, and was mentally preparing a response to rip you a new asshole.

Just remember that the "original" was a blog post quoting an email posted by someone other than the writer---the "original" title was not the author of the email's.

I never expected much---and I sure didn't expect them to find it a year and a half later. Apparently it was left in a no-bike-zone and they realized it was stolen from the registration number. Glad I registered!

The point that crime like theft is lower in Japan is totally valid, but I can promise you people do lock their bikes---bike theft is very common. You might not have noticed it because most bike locks come built into the bikes themselve

If you follow the "more information" link on Japan, you'll find that the high suicide rate is a recent thing that's happened since the Bubble burst.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Nobody has to lock their bikes? I've had three bikes stolen since I first came here in 1998---one of them twice! The cops found one of my bikes a year and a half after it was stolen. Within six months it was stolen ag

You're still bringing up the "tests are useless" thingy as if anyone has ever said anything so ridiculous. All I've seen is the criticism of teaching test-taking skills as opposed to content (and the retention thereof). I'm pretty sure th

I don't see what sharing music with your friends and incorporating GPLed software into closed/proprietary systems have to do with each other. Nobody's selling their torrents or claiming the music as their own.

I haven't read the comment that was downvoted, but my understanding was that it was the brand of vaccine that was stopped, and not the vaccine itself. Anti-vaccine talk is not nearly as common in Japan as in North America.
