Myopic viewpoints about code longevity tend to be driven by people that never worked on a project for more than 2 years. Few companies have business models that allow them to avoid the mess. It's not a problem for throw away projects or sta

Unfortunately it does. I've seen the exact same thing at a startup where they hired a receptionist. The girl took the job and told her current employer she was quitting. Probably no more than 2 days later the company reneged on their offer.

I think all we can say for certain is that large groups of people like to migrate to new forms of organized boredom.

It was only natural that the community's interests would broaden and lose focus. There was certainly a more strict focus prior to 5-6 months ago and definitely 4 years ago, however, HN was never strictly startup only news. In the initial s

Another format. Yes. That will fix everything. ePub already supports XHTML and CSS. Extending it to support HTML5 is trivial if the renderer is using Webkit...which many eReaders do. And lets not forget the importance of content and form. H

On the flip side, Google gathers data. It's part of its DNA. It's hard not to sound creepy. It will be officially creepy when he hits all the points of the Santa Clause song.

I do great one on one, probably better than most. I can converse without focusing on myself. I inquire, listen, reciprocate. What I suck at is group talk. Part of it is that I'm actually following what everyone is saying and not looking for

I think I would start a cultural movement to allow polyandry before resorting to a digital relationship. I know I've heard of fraternal polyandry. Any reason such relationships would be taboo in eastern cultures? Seems like it would be adva

If craigslist wasn't filled with so many fake adverts from brokers trying to reel in suckers that would be a realistic option. Generally, if the price looks good it will always be "just taken", but don't worry, there's "another property lik
