This scares the hell out of me from a retirement planning perspective. If I outlive my savings, what then?

For the people who don't need it, it's perfectly reasonable. That said, I suppose I haven't been fortunate enough to work on anything that doesn't need it.

Are you doing BI/analytics on it or do you unload to another stack for that?

Unless your workload is storing deeply-hierarchical-yet loosely-related-but-otherwise-independent documents, you have a relational model. Not using a relational engine doesn't change that.

You don't pick your storage layer based on perceived ease of devops, you pick it based on how well it accomplishes the needs of your workload. You pick it because it fits well in your architecture. If you're worried about scale

It's really not, the thing that makes a piece of software successful is not how many lines of bash it takes to "scale". It's how hard it is to need to scale. You're worried about the wrong thing.

After reading that, I cannot help but think that this person/company would be positively horrible to work for. I find myself wondering what his goal was when publishing that, because it didn't read (to me) as positive or helpful.

I have been writing an application that is a thin PHP application on top of a relational model that implements (what I hope is) a clever business. This framework would not solve a single problem I have had. None of the frameworks do, which

I like the bit about reacting to sign-ups from boeing.com emails, I wonder if anyone out there is curating a "whale list" that gives the domains you should care about.

Pretty sure most people treat the downvote button on comments as an "I disagree" button, which I don't think is helpful.

1. So then the problem they had was they didn't get the performance they expected since the benchmarks were done with different settings to juice the numbers? There is no upside to arguing this one, Mongo loses one way or the other.

Because multi-master clustering is extremely hard to do when you need transactional semantics. For those that need it, scaling up is by far the easiest path. Most of us will never exceed the growth rate of server capacity over time, so yo

An increase in diversity is a goal, it's not a course of action. We should be trying to root out whatever the underlying causes are that lead us to segregate ourselves into the groups that we end up in. Forced de-segregation (as in t

Maybe I've just been out for long enough now, but just this morning I found myself missing that life. I would have retired with 20 years in 2016 had I stayed in. Now for sure I don't miss power-drinking in the dorms or on TDY, bu

I wonder if this isn't a little late to market. At this point, the major cloud providers offer such a large array of products and services that add value to their VM capabilities that I find it hard to imagine someone architecting a s

Everything else is yours too, like getting an ROI out of the capital your spending. It's nice you have that kind of money laying around to spend on iron instead of advertising (as an example), but not everyone does.

The top story on their homepage is about how some Fox News anchor got arrested at an airport bar. I am not convinced that Mr. Reid will be fearing for his job as a result of this little stunt.

I think you're over-thinking it. I imagine this was done solely in response to heartbleed itself, not OpenBSD's fork. It's a good charter, I'm happy it's being done.

In a non-trival application, using a schemaless document store doesn't relieve you of having a schema, especially in the face of a relationship change. You either have to write a migration to change all the records, which non-MySQL re

Relational models are well-described and can be changed transactionally, both in structure and content, using a well-known and ubiquitous language to describe the migration. It doesn't get any easier than that.
