I couldn't get used to Unity and didn't want to stick with the increasingly antiquated and patched-up 10.04, so I made the switch a while ago at home to Xubuntu. It's not the perfect desktop, but I've got it almost how I want it, and it l

My ISP doesn't even provide its own DNS servers - their DHCP dishes out 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 to customers. Is this a good thing, or just them being cheap?

Excellent. I currently use a local ISP, because it's the only way I can get a decent speed where I live (there's a local FTTC network called Digital Region). But I'm likely to be moving out of their coverage area at some point, so I'll add

This seems to have been rumbling on for some time now - at least for the past five years or so. My OS supports IPv6, my home router supports IPv6, but at no point have any of the home ISPs I've used (three in the past five years - BT Intern

I thought this, too, when I started a job in a city centre for the first time - great, I'll take the train, and get so much work done on my commute instead of driving! No - it's impossible to work on a rattly, wobbly old train, standing u

I guess I'm lucky - I'd never looked before, but I checked, and I live in a very small town, about 50 feet from where Google Maps places my town name. I get your point - if you live in North London, then getting directions from "London" is

I just do it by entering the name of my town rather than my full address, on the basis that I already know how to get out of my own town, and only really need detailed directions once I get to the other end of the journey.

I get dependency errors on Chrome under Ubuntu 12.04, when I do a dpkg -i google-chrome-stable-whatever.deb. But a quick apt-get -f install after I get those errors sorts it out.

I'll likely get downvoted so far I pop up in New Zealand for this - but zzzzz. These expensive spats between huge companies just aren't interesting, or in any way relevant, to my life or business. They're just billion-dollar corporations fl

Why did you need a loan to buy a car? I just waited a couple of months until I'd saved enough to buy a small, fairly old car for cash. It's not a fancy car, but it is reliable, cheap to run, cheap to insure, and costs me nothing in terms of

I don't have £100,000 in student debt - because I didn't go to university. I'm not rich, but I'm financially independent. The only thing that would push me to get a nicer car would be better reliability, or better gas mileage - which both s

I own a car now, simply because I tried relying on public transport for a year and found the experience pretty depressing - it makes your day so very long (I was basically doing 6am-7pm including commuting) and loses you flexibility. I fell

I use it all the time - 3G coverage is patchy where I live, and Opera Mini is far quicker and more reliable over a slow mobile connection than trying to load a bloated 300k+ page over a 12kbps GPRS link.

I did the same - I'd been clinging onto the outdated 10.04 LTS for some time, because I didn't want to move to either Unity or Gnome 3 (tried both for a fortnight each, in daily use, and just couldn't be as productive on either). Eventually

Digital TV switchover has killed a lot of the mega-power transmitters, though. In the North West, for instance, Winter Hill used to run around 1,000kW for each of the analogue TV channels. Post-DSO, this is down to 100kW per multiplex, as t

I'm in the market for a new desktop monitor right now, and I'm finding it really difficult to find a 4:3 aspect ratio at a decent price. I'm not using the computer to watch movies, it's a PC, not a TV, and I value my vertical screen space.
