I don't have a credit card, only a Maestro (used to be Switch) card. Google Checkout stopped accepting these a few months ago.

The reason the phone company can't use your phone number the minute you cancel your contract is so that there will not be a large number of people dialing that number and getting someone else than the one they expect. Last time I took out

Is that wall of text really how Wikipedia administrators sort things out amongst themselves? Did they have a competition to design the most intimidating user interface known to man? It's impenetrable.

I was looking the other day for the webcam in the nearby village of, er, Flash. It took me a few seconds to realise why my searches for "Flash webcam" weren't finding it.

And if it works with wi-fi at 2.6GHz, why would it not work with the more broadly available and higher-powered 3G cell signals at 2.1GHz?

That blog post makes no sense and borders on the offensive - "[she] obviously does not give a damn if her state were filled by Iranian shit" is the sort of thing I'd expect to read on a far-right website. Am I missing something here?

Ever since I got followed down the street after buying a mobile phone a few years ago, I've always taken one of those big reusable supermarket bags with me to buy anything pricey. People are far less likely to look twice at you if you've go

The Firefox menu in the top-left corner looks remarkably similar to the O menu that's appeared in the latest Opera alpha ( http://goo.gl/Chfb ). I like the way a lot of the cruft from 1990s Windows applications is starting to disappear from

There's AdSweep at http://adsweep.org/ - I've never managed to get it to work on Opera 10 under Ubuntu, but I find it works well on Chrome and plenty of people have given it good reviews.

At our small office, there's currently a four-foot snowman standing in a doorway. It makes me do a double-take when I come across it first thing in the morning before I turn the lights on. I think I'd turn and run if I came across some of t

My ISP's DNS server (in the UK) quite frequently goes down or slow - it's useful to have an alternative to switch to. Normally, I change to OpenDNS then change back when the ISP one is back up to avoid the ads. However, since changing to Go

I'd love to do the same, but in many areas of the UK (like mine) both Ceefax and Teletext have already disappeared. It's being removed along with the analogue TV signal region-by-region until the final transmitters are turned off in 2012.

I've had two kernel updates (40+ MB downloads and a required reboot) in the past month or so on the latest Ubuntu, but in general you're right, these updates aren't usually this common. OpenOffice updates seem to be the worst in Ubuntu; a f

The simplicity of this site makes it far more conducive to mobile browsing than, say, BBC News or the NYT. Some of the indentation on comments can be a bit of a pain, but it's perfectly workable on the Opera Mini browser I use.

How many countries do you list first, though? I find those forms annoying - the US and Canada sit at the top of the list, but then to find the UK I have to go down and look near the United Arab Emirates or Uruguay or some such place. But th

They're already all but gone. There will be an election by next May and they are expected to lose heavily - there is currently a spate of legislation they're attempting to shove through in a rush before they're booted out. However, I can't

If it'll only work when you're somewhere with wi-fi, that immediately cripples its usefulness. Amazon realised this with the Kindle - that's why they went to the considerable trouble of dealing with the telcos to include a SIM card and conn

I agree - I really like Chrome (and Opera, for what it's worth) and I can generally cope with the normal ads on most sane web sites these days. But some sites go over the top and a few minutes of looking at flashing, flickering, CPU-hogging
