The other way around: Avro is supported by pretty much any language out there, while you can't even write a Parquet file on Python, and even reading it is pretty hard.

It might be more about bureaucracy than about cost. At my last job even small expenses would require printing forms and getting the CFO to sign them, so in the end it was pretty much not worth it for small tests.

Yeah, I do this every day: I treat my work laptop as a desktop, and just remote desktop into it from a Chromebook (or a Macbook, depending on where I am) whenever I want to work remote.
