It's amazing how it's 2012 and we're just now getting around to what flash did years ago, the only difference being a more open, more reliable, standards compliant runtime. Thinking back on the last 10 years of web dev, it seems like Adobe

That's a sad story, and one that's too common in our industry. Mental health issues in software are sadly under-discussed. If you feel like making a difference I'd recommend donating to the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation. They fun

I strongly disagree with this view of document stores as 'easier' to work with. For some tasks, this is undeniably true, but for most business problems I think this is just not the case. The profound irony behind this is that schema-less do

The big difference is Rails was already powering 37 Signals' success. Meteor is a framework without a major success story. APIs that are not direct extractions tend to be problematic.

While Rails has been a massive success the ruby language hasn't been particularly popular much beyond that. I'd say python has a more even distribution in terms of use in varied fields for instance.

I strongly disagree with that slogan re: complexity. Complexity covers so much, its definition so sprawling, that the phrase has no meaning. I'd rather focus on the language's real strength, fast, concurrenty, portable computation in very w

Perhaps. I've run linux year over year til 6 mo. ago when I switched to a mac. As nice as this is I just doubt the hardware is of a similar quality. Additionally, for a notebook the magsafe connector is a huge deal as it's the thing I've se

This isn't something I'm so nuts about. It's hard to look your coworkers in the eye and say 'I should make more money than you'. Seems like that's a problem there. OTOH I could see myself saying, "I'm sure I could get $X elsewhere, so I wou

I'm pretty happy with vagrant images. Ultimately, putting your dev environment on a server image makes way more sense.

Frankly, the selling point that clojure minimizes risk is not a compelling one. It sounds sexy, but its nonsensical. Risk encompasses many aspects of technical decisions and there's a complicated set of interactions between these aspects. S

FWIW in JDK 8 hash map will most likely degrade into a lookup on a red-black tree rather than a linked list for buckets with more than 8 collisions.

I disagree, the add-on I wrote, noir-async (which is really just sugar for noir + aleph), fully supports mixed streaming and chunked. However, the reason I wrote that non-streaming endpoints should be separate apps is that their performance

Not really, according to the EBS docs, they can pull missing blocks from EBS from S3. You shouldn't have to perform a restore. The uncertainty should only apply to the delta unless I'm mistaken.

Yep, I've been telling this to people for years, and they keep sticking their fingers in their ears because they think they're entitled to magic uptime by amazon. The key to EBS is frequent S3 snapshots. The reliability issues of EBS only a

This can be worked around with stuff like rack-stream ( https://github.com/intridea/rack-stream ) I'm the maintainer of a similar project for clojure called noir-async. Noir is built on ring, clojure's version of rack, and has no notion of

Glad to hear it. I think jruby's going to have a much larger role to play in ruby's future going forward. From a strategic standpoint I'd say that RedHat seems like more of a fit than engineyard at this point.

The X32 ABI is interesting. Who'd have thought this many years after 64 bit becoming mainstream, (and decades after it becoming mainstream on servers) something like this would be needed.

You can't compare servers to servers. Each app has its own computational needs and caching rules. Your hit is not my hit. One site might simply render a template, another might perform 20 queries and generate giant complex docs.

The value of this is far overstated. You can think of your server as being composed of async queues and thread pools, even in node. About the only thing in a stack that truly is async is connection handling via epoll. Mysql itself is a big

Hardly meaningless. The problem is that the larger application benchmarks fall prey to accusations of "I wouldn't write it that way!". Their results are just as hotly disputed. This micro-benchmark makes sense. It's benchmarking an HTTP se
