Mine is also at Dallas (dallas98) but has only been up for ~20 minutes and is extremely slow. edit: Looks like my VPS was offline for 20 ~ 30 minutes and has settled down now.

Any recommended reading on synchronisation? No specific scenario in mind, just curious.

On that tangent, if you're an OS X user and like myself you can't quite muster the faith to use FileVault for your home folder, Disk Utility (or hdiutil at the terminal prompt) will allow you to create encrypted disk images to stash your se

Renai: I'm curious given your submission history as to what process you go through in deciding whether or not to submit your articles here - care to comment?

Don't the options largely depend on you? What do you find to be such an imposition that you'd like to leave?

I'm an Australian and I agree with your comments except to say that I find the "laid back" attitude is a bit of a misnomer - it's really indifference spun to appear as a positive thing.

I think what SwellJoe is getting at is that different software won't address misunderstandings and assumptions. Eg: There's a lot of folks out there who aren't aware that they should incrementally drop a records TTL prior to changing it's d

A good reverse proxy will buffer client and server side so that your heavy app can be available to serve the next request whilst the light proxy feeds the page back to a slow client. Under certain circumstances serving static files from sep

Not sure I follow — are you suggesting it's distracting at a subconscious level? I find it a stretch to say any of the examples you mention are analogous to small static monotone icons in the corner of a screen; they no more distract me tha

I wonder how something as utilitarian as a volume control or battery status icon could disturb or distract someone. Sure for a minimal aesthetic it could be considered superfluous, but a distraction? Seems a bit neurotic to me.

Actually, the keyboard shortcuts do work; I'm pretty comfortable saying that since I use the OS everyday. Also, your suspicions are wrong - every native application implements these shortcut keys. Don't take this the wrong way, but Window

No default. On my computer it was Ctl-F8, Ctl-L which was setup using the built-in Keyboard short configuration tool. Most of the time I just used hot corners though. That said, I no longer work in an environment where I need that kind of f

Respectfully, it seems like every time I see this comment it's from a Windows power user who's not that familiar with OS X - can you please provide an example?

It's not that much more complicated to show a hidden app - Ctl+F3 to activate the Dock, use the arrow keys to select the App and hit return.

Could I contact you (or you me, see profile) for some Erlang advice? I know next to nothing about the language but I suspect it'd be a good fit for something I'm working on and the input of someone who's used it in anger would be very helpf

My startup's a Wide-Area Bonjour service (DNS with client updates, long lived queries and a convention for service discovery) which squares it in the client/server camp although it does have a web interface. The next thing I want to do isn

I was double checking I'd put the right IP in for a new master about 3 hours ago when it went down. DNS was responding ok so I figured I'd skip harassing David given it was ~03:00 on that side of the pond.

A view does not intrinsically have worth just because of it's existence. Scoble is a tech-evangelist; someone who uses technology and not someone who builds upon it. As someone who builds things, I value the perspective of folks who will bu

I treat Scoble's view of Wave with the same reverence I'd apply to his views on TokyoTyrant. He's not an opinion-leader on this one as far I'm concerned.

I assume you've been down voted because Chrome OS as the name implies will be an operating system (not a web page) and a cursory investigation would have revealed that. Aside from that, the structure of your sentence is awkward and further
