I applaud Microsoft for finally taking the step, but I wonder how much this will actually change the stats around browser market share. My understanding was that most IE6 users, even in the developing world, were admin-imposed. Either way,

I may be in the minority, but I'll be slightly disappointed (although extremely impressed) if CERN actually does announce they've sighted the Higgs. I'll be slightly disappointed because there's something appealing in the possibility that t

Somehow, "Bill, would you consider returning to lead Microsoft?" "No." Became a 1000 word article. Amazing. The "HN Dream" has always seemed to be: 1) Make a startup 2) Strike it rich 3) Acquire millions (billions? I forget which is "cool")

I love that these guys are so consistently open on their scaling strategies. Does anyone have any similar resources for Rails stacks?

It's funny that we get this kind of response after that rant about the future of UI earlier this week If we think about the future of touch and gesture interfaces, I absolutely think we'll see a hover state be implemented, but it won't be c

They seem to have pulled down the Mobile boilerplate, which is too bad - I was a fan of that. I wonder if they're implying we should use html5 v2 for mobile now. I know v2 has a "mobile-first" focus...

This is a confusing feeling. The Firefox release mechanism makes this more frustrating than friendly. With Chrome, my browser automatically updates for stuff like this. I never see it and always have the correct version. For Firefox, I have

Is this kind of thing really helpful? I mean if I think about what "Hacker" means to me, it's someone who's passionate enough about computers to explore the inner workings and make cool things. It seems to me that if you need a guide for th

I was looking for exactly this service a few weeks ago and would be a paying customer, but I develop on Windows. A future market, if you're interested.

I actually disagree with the author's point about the "main story". The main story for me, and I'd wager for some of the other people on this board too, is the story of the engineers who are still working to keep Fukushima under some sembla

How does a "startup" differ from any other business? You write a business plan, invest some saved-up capital, work your ass off, charge for your product and hopefully bring in more money than you spend. To me, the only thing "startup" seems

I personally wish for a crippled version of IE9 that doesn't use GPU acceleration but reliably backports to XP. But I can also see how that could be a nightmare to develop and maintain.

I really don't want to have to start thinking of myself as a "Firefox Developer". If it surfs the web, be it desktop browser, mobile browser, screen reader, robot or even IE, it's part of my job as a web developer.

There was a flash game a while back that someone drew up a concept for that, to me, looked really compelling. It included buying coffee machines, source control, hiring developers, etc. Anyone know if that game was ever actually made?

While on a significantly smaller scale, this is exactly why I program in my off-time. Nobody's going to make a lot of money or solve an important problem by messing around with an app that creates fake iPhone SMS conversations, but it keeps

What an awesome idea. First of all, thanks for building this. Like others have said, you've probably added years to our lives. As a novel bonus, it'd be neat if you could wire up a twitter account that did song recognition and status update

This seems silly. If the browser was better, I'd use it. And I'd be very happy that the future of the web looked so bright. That said, I don't think it's likely that IE9 will even catch up to today's Chrome, let alone pass it.
