Some use the convention that jQuery objects should be prefixed with $, so: var $d = $('#elm'); $d.color('red'); $d.text('new text'); I do this, and like it, despite my classic aversion to both Systems Hungarian and GW-BASIC.

I think a lot of it comes down to SOAP, and related standards, being ambiguous and changing enough over time that even if you follow the standards, it isn't necessarily clear what you can and should do. Take a look at WS-I, the standard whi

Also, SOAP libraries (e.g. Soap4r) are problematic (doesn't talk to Micro$soft's version of SOAP properly). I feel this point never quite lands home with people who've never tried to use SOAP across ecosystems (ie not .NET-.NET, Glassfish

The iPad doesn't have the concept of a hover, so websites pretty much have to work without it. It'd be nice if Apple could turn around and kill the hover in Safari when somebody's using the zoom feature. It'd be even nicer if you could togg

(This is an academic point for me right now - I'm building an app in Facebook, and Facebook requires Javascript.) It seems like your zoom software interacts badly with behaviour that's common on some websites. Disabling Javascript seems lik

If anyone wanted to burn their relationship with me, spying on what most would consider to be unwatched activity, involving something as specific and interpersonal as email, would be a pretty good way. It's just... creepy. If you have a leg

Perth, Australia is substantially the same. If you're really eating ramen or beans and rice, food could be a bit less. Figure about $100/month for comfortable use of electricity and gas.

In my experience with things like postgres, yes. If your working set (the data that you are touching regularly) grows past available RAM, you very rapidly switch from a system where disk access plays no part in most queries, to a system whe

Or keep a pitcher of water on your desk, and you'll have to go to the bathroom every once in a while. This is one of the reasons staying hydrated is recommended on long flights - it forces you to get up and move at some point.

I wonder if this is more for the sake of C++ than C, where primitive values are more likely to be 'boxed' into a struct/class along with some methods. For instance, with a typical non-debug standard library, vector<int>::iterator ha

I don't think most pictures on the Internet come from a camera verbatim. If you look at something like cnn.com or arstechnica.com - most images on that page have been scaled, cropped, composited with other images and finally re-encoded.

I think doing more than one UI upfront is an optimistic mistake. Pick a primary platform and optimise it. Maybe do a less-than-awesome port, if you're eager. If, down the road, your experience with the primary platform leads you to believe

Realistically, you'd also have to track the allocation, and deallocation, of the range the file is being mmap(2)d into. sendfile(2) (it appears, I don't really spend time in the Linux kernel) piggybacks on the kernel's pipe code; it allocat
