I've been an active member of a particular, very popular, and long-running boating forum. It's been around years before facebook and twitter. FOMO, envy, and keeping-up are just as much a thing in the marine communities as they ar

I don't count HN as modern social media. For me, it's more akin to older phpBB boards and the like. We have no avatars, we come and go on posting, reading. We have only usernames and karma, and no one cares how much karma someone

What I didn't see in the docs that would be of great interest is benchmarks for Deno in Cloudflare workers versus vanilla Node.

I've ended up using last major versions as well. I plan to move to Deno anyhow, and authors like sindresorhus are at least applying security updates to the major version before the switch.

You can tell TS to output ESM. Try using top-level await with TS and you'll run into that. The configuration options are vast.

I really, really loathe how major packages in the ecosystem are "We're ESM now, deal with it, sorry about your luck," and forcing the issue. It's arrogant as hell. A hard fork of Node for ESM would have been a much bette

The parallel between similarities of modern day stadiums and arenas in many major cities, and structures bearing similar size and shape to one another shared among major population centers in this part of the ancient world, is striking.

We say this now, ignoring the hot messes that were SourceSafe, Pervasive, CVS, and SVN. Git is light years more elegant that predecessors, and its holding power is evidence of that. We're able to criticize now because we've had th

Lambda + SNS + CloudWatch (with alarms) is a successful pattern for invoking other lambas very async and still being notified of problems. Swap in SQS if you're in need of message retry.

Is "Vendor lock-in" a good argument anymore? I've never been with a company that's moved cloud providers, and I'd bet it's a pretty rare case.

You might want to edit that comment and speak towards cold start times, dependency management, your deployment strategy (e.g. are you using a docker image lambda or zip, etc) and what you're paying for provisioned concurrency to keep t

Hard disagree with the reasons given for "2. Orchestrator Lambda." While step functions are very useful and have a variety of uses, they're also VASTLY more expensive to run (the cost continues to go down but last I checked,

I've ended friendships with people that could not be civil over our idealogical differences, despite my indifference about the differences. Many get sucked up into what's online and let it lead them offline. It's sad.

A few years back I met a woman at a bar, flirted, got a number, and went on a date. About 30 minutes into the date she brought up politics, and was on the opposite side of the spectrum from myself. That didn't change that I thought she
