Thanks for the response - I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing these issues. I've read a lot of articles recommending MemcacheDB but none mention these issues. I wish the authors had actually tested MemcacheDB before writing a

I've had problems with MemcacheDB and I'm curious to hear about other people's experiences. Basically, I've found that under high read/write loads I get occasional socket timeouts (tested on linux/osx). I think the underlying reason for the

I abandoned Protocol Buffers because the Python implementation was too slow. The problem is that Google hasn't written a C-extension yet because it wouldn't be compatible with AppEngine. It's a known problem that has gone undocumented. htt

I think you're right that at best it is a dirty business practice and at worse it's a scam. I found a blog posting about an identical email that someone else had received ( http://www.jamesmaurer.com/domain-registration-scam.asp ).

We were all doing physics before Octopart so we were pretty comfortable in a unix environment. I took a class in C as a sophomore in college and Sam took the same class in Java. When we decided we were going to start a company I had never h

The entire thing is pretty funny - we never thought an electronic parts search engine would get on the front page of reddit. Here are the reddit stats: 4056 unique ips, ~10000 queries The reddit post also got us traffic from popurls.com (15

The problem is not that Digi-Key is ignoring Octopart, but that they are making frivolous legal claims in order to rack up Octopart's legal bills. Digi-Key is acting the same way Microsoft did when they sued Linux for patent infringement.

In an earlier post, I pointed out some price discrepancies between the electronic parts industry and the consumer electronics industry ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=168796 ). This is the evidence that I'm basing my assertion on. Inc

The reason Paul is calling Digi-Key evil is because they are actively trying to kill Octopart in order to preserve their monopoly pricing, not because they won't cooperate. Octopart needs as much cooperation from Digi-Key as Google needs fr

Digi-Key is the largest small-volume distributor of electronic parts in the US. They do $1.2Bn per year in revenue of which $700M is done online. Their gross margins are about 50% and their business is growing at 20% per year. When Microsof

In addition to listing parts from Digi-Key and Mouser we've also started indexing more consumer oriented sites like Newegg. Where there is overlap between Digi-Key and Newegg, we've found that the distributors are 10%-100% more expensive. F

Personally, we don't view them as evil (or ourselves as good, for that matter). We have had good experiences ordering from Digi-Key as well. They have a lot of parts in stock and they ship things right away so we don't have any qualms with

Since there are a lot more degree holders than dropouts, it's probably mathematically true that there are more PhDs starting companies. I wonder what percentage of dropouts start companies vs. percentage of PhDs. That is basically what I wa

In practice, it's hard to completely change course and take on even more risk once you are finished with your Ph.D. Often it's the dropouts that start companies and the PhDs that join them. In Physics, a Masters typically means 2 years of c
