Did something very similar 10 years ago for Linux. PAM plugin. https://sourceforge.net/projects/pampka/ Don't hate, I was in my second year of college ;-). Of course it probably has bit rotted quite a bit by

Experienced same with an iPhone 5s and a three-prong Belkin charger in a Puerto Rico rental. Scared the hell out of me, too. Brushing the metallic back I'd feel sticking. I think I licked it too, and it felt sour.

I was initially going to type something along the lines of not speaking for others, but then realized that it comes down to projecting your own sense of self-worth. (Yes, projecting without having anything to back it up with is asinine.) In

That "ugly white notebook" was one of the most usable laptops in its day, *nix or windows, and it still isn't that ancient - computing innovation really has slowed down significantly. Compare to notebooks from '96 and p

Don't get me wrong - great work, it takes real skill to put something like this together and a good understanding of the architecture / platform, but why would anyone adopt this over Multiboot v2 or UEFI? The later are cross-arch&

There's a big difference to hiding and simply not knowing about. If you write a kernel you will need to write architecture-specific primitives (and some non-quite-primitive code, since you bring up SMP) to deal with all the categories

That Russian plane carried 224 human beings - in many cases these were entire families spanning three generations. There were more than 25 children killed. Thanks for objectifying the tragedy. It's only a plane, after all, right?

nVidia...are you listening? Uncripple your firmware so booting custom images is not a song-and-dance (you broke it in 1.4!) and at least TELL us where the UART pads are on the motherboard. If you're really cool put together an "of

Dunno, depending on what you're doing the Shield TV costs less and does about the same. People are running Ubuntu on these today, and you get the video, XHCI USB, GigE ethernet and WiFi working fine. Of course having a more "norma

OT: those are some skewed definitions of meritocracy... The real issue the feminist camp is missing is that in a real meritocracy no one looks at your gender or background. The real issue at stake in the corporate world today is that a meri

Wow, neat! Looking forward to hearing back. Fortunately, with the exception of a single use of SIM_WRITE_CONSOLE_CODE (main.c:L356), no other callthru facilities are used.

The hearsay is that Power8 and GPUs seem like a convenient marriage as far as HPC in the data center goes, and GPUs are little endian. And although part of the problems are solvable at the driver level, no one wants to spend time making a

Power8 and OpenPOWER has seen some mentions on HN, but not a whole lot of focus has been made on the software aspect of the platform. I became intrigued because OpenPOWER finally makes little-endian PowerPC a first-class ecosystem. I decide

Keep in mind this article was written in 2007 about the majority of NT installations at that time. Vista introduced a new unified boot architecture that replaced NTLDR with something that could work on BIOS and UEFI as well (and removed the

(U)EFI has a very open architecture. MS could well write an NTFS driver and register it with the firmware to be loaded prior to handing off to the NT boot manager. These sort of things tend to go against the grain of platform portability, t
