I appreciate this piece of feedback. I've been consciously trying to keep the article interesting technically and avoid it being construed as an advertisement for D, to the extent a couple of coworkers and at least one other colleague

Preprocessing with clang would be very tricky in a system that uses gcc for the compilation proper (which we do). Clang adds its own predefined #defines, which may change the resulting code.

I'd be curious to see how clang does, too. What matters to us is that warp is easy to get into so we can easily adapt it to our build system (in particular multithreaded preprocessing that saves on opening same included files multiple

(I work at Facebook but not on Hack.) There's a lot to be said about backward compatibility, and much of Hack's virtuosity stems in its smooth interoperability with PHP - many millions of lines of it. There's nothing like wor

I think this is starting to meander. We're talking about lexers, not parsers, and for a stable language, not a language being designed.

Clearly that's something to worry about. What won our team over was the (sometimes spectacular) speed gains compared to the C++ linter.

There's a fine line to walk between "Not Invented Here" and suffering through an inadequate tool. We at Facebook have a long history of trying stock tools and see them failing at our scale. Walter Bright puts out a good argum

Quite a few things. The Go version was written by a person enthusiastic and presumably competent in Go. See their perspective here where he concedes defeat on the performance front: http://blog.nella.org/mqtt-code-golf/

There are two open-source D compilers that track the reference front-end, which is also open source. (Thanksgiving wish: this misinformation will cease to exist one day.)

Thanks for the insight. Ali Çehreli has a free book in the works, and once that's ready it'll be visibly featured on the front page. Also, obviously we will add a link to this very tutorial. Thanks again!
