The idea behind "being open" and "using XMPP" is to make network effects irrelevant: XMPP federation allows you to talk to anybody also using XMPP, regardless of their service provider -- imagine messaging Facebook Messenger users seamlessl

There are some technical reasons, such as that the encryption is broken, the protocol isn't open and they have everybody's address books. Also, you can only use it from your phone. But (apart from the address book issue maybe) most people d

In his 29c3 talk [0], Sean Bonner from Safecast [1] mentioned that air monitoring is something they'd like to do as well. I'm very much interested in monitoring air pollutants. I live in a place in Germany where BASF built "the worlds large

Some core concepts of upstart and systemd are incompatible. Even if they patched upstart instead of starting from scratch it would now be a completely different system. In his initial blog post about systemd, Lennart Poettering writes: "We

isn't the nature of Open Source to be constantly forking, iterating, and contributing new code when you think the existing stuff isn't good enough? You can always start from scratch if existing projects don't cut it. When talking about a

Yeah, well, good luck convincing, say, chinese farmers not to give tons of antibiotics to their livestock This is also a problem in North America. Try buying a simple disinfectant (e.g. for small cuts) that doesn't contain antibiotics.

This is the bug that made me lose all confidence in Canonical and switch distributions. In 10.04, they cared about integrating a Twitter client into the panel, but failed to notice that the system load never went below 1.

And worse? It's not fixable by anyone outside the core team of developers as they've moved away from the standard XUL UI system to a pure Java wrapper. I was going to get in there and whip up some add-ons because I really wanted to use the

You should take a look at info-beamer. It supports displaying video via FFMPEG, you could show browser content via VNC, and the best thing is that you can hot-swap the animation code while it is running. It's a bit like Processing, but much

Exactly, there is no market for real privacy and openness, and it certainly is not in Google's or Apple's interests. That's why I count on free software to close the gap. Free as in: free of corporate interests, no need to make money, no
