Many things that used to be h.264 are now using h.265 (hevc). Without this license a lot of applications can't play hevc at all, they rely on the codecs included in windows (which are unavailable without a license). They either fall ba

It only affects new devices, they don't pull the existing licenses. Not every device includes a HEVC license. For cheap consumer devices or custom built PCs no license is the norm. It just used to be the norm for the premium brands to

So the fault is at purchasing departments, that buy incompatible laptops. They would probably need to order hevc as an option, or roll out licenses via MDM. Individual buyers can just buy the HEVC license from the Windows store. I think win

Is it possible to just buy the HEVC extension on the Microsoft store to enable it? I have a PC that came without the license, and I had to buy it to get everything working. It was more an annoyance than a problem, it's only a 99 cent p

Isn't there a certification for ms teams for pcs? I've seen a lot of headsets and speakers with a "certified for ms teams" badge on it. I guess Microsoft needs to extend it to laptops too, make hevc support mandatory and

I meant the remarks about wiktionary in a sarcastic way. Explaining the word’s meaning twice by itself was a bit funny. Especially as it’s not a very common word a lot of non-native speakers need to look up. Probably also a few native speak

I don't think they will actively "pull" their services. They are based in the US, and don't specifically target EU customers. I guess they just won't comply and might be blocked.

Try to twist around words and phrases, at some point it might start to fail. I tried it again yesterday with GPT. GPT-5 manages quite well too in thinking mode, but starts crackling in instant mode. 4o completely failed. It's not that

Signal already announced they won't add back doors, even if it means they are going to be blocked. Which is really funny, because the EU commission recommends to their employees to use Signal for texting.

It really shows how LLMs work. It's all about probabilities, and not about understanding. If something looks very similar to a well known problem, the llm is having a hard time to "see" contradictions. Even if it's reall

There are millions of people voting against that stuff. But it would require hundreds of millions to stop it.

Will it possible to "DDoS" those systems? It can't be illegal to role-play a grooming situation between consenting adults in a private conversation. If millions of people do that, they must be buried in reports.

The UK normalized surveillance for decades. In most other European countries this is a completely different story. The backlash would be far stronger than in the UK.

If they really ban everyone under 16 from texting, this would also become kind of a time bomb. A lot of those affected teens will be allowed to vote very soon. And they might have a very different mental image of the EU than the generations

I just don't believe they would be able to roll it out. A lot of messaging services won't implement chat control. If half of the messaging apps are getting blocked, people will get angry. There will be massive backlash towards EU.

I think the selection of models is a bit off. Haiku instead of Sonnet for example. Kimi K2's capabilities are closer to Sonnet than to Haiku. GPT-5 might be in the non-reasoning mode, which routes to a smaller model.
