Well, I'm not sure signalfd(2) was feasible back when signals were added. Was it? Today it's usual to structure your main() as some kind of select()-like loop; even if you don't need one for your main workflow, at the worst you can spawn an

No, it isn't ridiculous. I've seen many projects available for multiple OS's that choose to advertise themselves with a Mac screenshot (or a Windows screenshot, or a Linux screenshot) at the top. The screenshot by itself says it runs on Mac

Doesn't say it on the page either until the very bottom. It's almost as if it's a statement _not_ to say it upfront. It transmits the unspoken assumption that you don't care about anything else or you don't expect your visitors to.

This is a good program. It reminds me of the curriculum of St. John's College: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._John%27s_College_(United_St... Perhaps I'm overly optimistic, but it seems plausible to me that there's a subreddit out there

I only read Dune last year (I'm in my thirties), and really disliked it. Your comment, however, emphasizes a virtue I did not sufficiently acknowledge at the time. It _is_ true that Dune was able to weave a lot of background into the story

Sure it's possible, but you have no evidence for it. Consider what your argument reduces to: - CS says the path to super-intelligent AI lies through human-equivalent AI (actually, he says Vinge's program says that, and he explicitly critici

Your rebuttal can be used as is to argue that an oracle to the Halting Problem is a superintelligence, and that Stross's argument doesn't demonstrate the unlikelihood of someone implementing a fast approximation to it tomorrow.

I don't know what tptacek based his words on github takedown requests on; I'm basing mine specifically on the comment by 'R' to the blog post. You make a point elsewhere that the post's author's repository is live on github, but that's not

Your comment does appear disingenuous, though I'm sure that's not deliberate. Neither false DMCA notifications nor github takedown requests are legitimate responses to "simple nerd-rage" when it's about MIT-licensed code. I'm sure you under

When that thread came up originally, I was intrigued by the idea of the dual-pivot quicksort, and went on to browse Robert Sedgewick's Ph.D. thesis, _Quicksort_, published in 1978. Sedgewick considers and analyzes several variants of quicks

Here's the easiest way I can think of to imagine an ordering that works for what you need. Imagine an infinite square lattice: a plane where the As lie on one axis and the Bs on the other, and there's a dot in every integer-coordinates poin

The hard thing about this problem is to neutralize the "random data" that can pass whatever error-checking you want to enforce. I don't remember all the details but the trick is (substantial hint) SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER to use indirection.
