Well the maiden passenger flight of the A320 crashed at the Paris Air Show, and the pilot said the fly-by-wire system didn't let him pull up[1]. Officially it was pilot error though. There have been nearly 1,400 fatalities with the A32

No nasty tricks - these aren’t NaN or Infinity OK but then the first example is a naive computation of the mean of two enormous numbers. All this really illustrates is that you need to be aware of the range of your inputs and choose a sol

Why is that? I've seen that: dedicated, separated bike paths are unused, and cyclists continue to ride in the street with the cars.

Pretty good. I disagree on long term residents. Just as nobody is entitled to live wherever they want regardless of whether they can afford it, nobody is entitled to live in the same place forever if they can't afford it. The history o

Firefighters live in the station when they are on duty. So they'll commute in from wherever they can afford to live. If there aren't enough who will do that, we'll pay them more.

Doesn't mean people were wrong 15 years ago. At the time most of those things were real issues. Especially speed.

Fine. Point being, 20 years sounds like a long time when you're 25. When you're 55 or 60, and reflect on how fast that time went by, 15 or 20 years doesn't sound like very long. Certainly not enough time to make up for a life

News flash: we're all going to die, and time flies. At the typical retirement age of 65, most people have 10 or 15 years left. I'd advise a sensible diet and enjoying life while you are young. Don't spend time ruminating abou

Yes, in particular the 737 is a cables and levers and pullys design. It can fly totally manually. If the pilots had realized they had a trim problem, and switched off the electric trim, and trimmed manually (literally turning a crank in the

Point 7 is incorrect. Automatic trim adjustments by the Speed Trim System (STS) had been in place for a long time. However using automatic trim changes during manual flight to reduce a pitch-up tendency near the stall was new.

I'm not sure I like this. How secure is it? Anything you put on port 22 is going to be attacked relentlessly. I think I'd rather have OpenSSH handling those attacks than some tarpit program that may or may not have been subjected

Laundry is absolutely the biggest "housekeeping" item I have trouble with. I would pay a lot of money (thousands of dollars) for a robot that would take dirty laundry and wash, dry, and fold.

Interesting speculation that the 22-degree offset in the two AoA sensor readings in the Lion Air crash corresponds closely with a "bit flip" error in the digital representation of the value.
