I’m supposed to be scared of the military who has spent the last 80 years losing wars against nations a fraction of its own size? The US couldn’t “seize” afghanistan in two decades, what makes you think it could “seize nearly every country

If all US internet companies stopped existing tomorrow the world would be no worse off for it. The internet infrastructure is great. Networking hardware is great. Private internet companies built on top of it? Big whoop

Calling out people for “bad high school math” when you can’t even write a coherent sentence is pathetic. A man saving 10K per year goes bankrupt if he doesn’t spend it productively? That’s what you’re trying to say?

You have a special loathing for a site where you can message professional contacts when you need to? Nobody is forcing you to use the social networking features. Just use it as a way to keep in touch with coworkers.

Do you really want a “competitor” to linkedin? Do you really want to have to make and manage accounts on multiple sites because you need a job and you don’t know which a company uses? Isn’t it better to have a single place you check when yo

Your loss. Twitter was an incredible place from 2010 to 2017. You could randomly message something and they would more often than not respond. Eventually an opportunity would come and you’d meet in person. Or maybe you’d form an online comm

Good thing I posted statistics that show this is an industry wide phenomenon and not just high risk companies going bust then!

I couldn’t agree more, I think AI is more about taking power away from tech workers who have historically had a lot of power compared to other non unionized workers.

I agree, I think AI taking jobs is all smoke and mirrors by companies trying to gas up their stock prices

It’s ok to admit that you were wrong. Your experience is good, but the industry is doing very poorly right now. I showed you data to back that up. Someone else posted data about Europe. Don’t close your eyes and plug your ears and pretend y

It’s a good thing that there’s centuries of philosophy on that subject and the general consensus is that no, tools are not “neutral” and do shape the systems they interact with, sometimes against the will of those wielding these tools. See

It’s not that different from giving a presentation in front of your team to a stakeholder. It’s not that different from speaking up in your neighborhood group. Speaking in front of people and advocating for yourself is a core human skill. I

That doesn’t control for socioeconomic background. Yes, homeschooled kids do better than the average. The average is also dragged down by the country deciding that if your parents are poor you should starve.

Considering there’s lawyers risking their careers by using AI, I think the lesson here is that if you allow people to be lazy they will. Humans are built for efficiency. If a beginner writer thinks AI can write a better article than they ca

Every day there’s mounting evidence that humans can not be trusted with this technology, even at risk of being fired. And yet the people pushing it on us won’t be punished. They’ll be rewarded with obscene wealth.

Right, the networking is the biggest hurdle in splitting up your infra. The compliance issues are another big one though, for organizations that are still scaling up and don’t have that know how using cloud is a huge advantage as well.

I agree with that, but I don’t understand how that’s particularly relevant to a bare metal vs cloud discussion. Wouldn’t you need to do the work to shard regardless of where you’re running?

Databases are rarely the bottleneck during access volume spikes in my experience. It’s really impressive how far some beefy servers and a read copy can take you. But if that is your bottleneck you should be upgrading your DB system regardle

You can use the cloud to dynamically scale when needed while still running most of your own infra, best of both worlds. Tricky networking though.
