The idea is that the community decides on a fork and maintainers move over. Are those really the exception? Do we have examples of large projects that made a monetization TOS change and didn't immediately get forked? The only one I can

I see where you're coming from, but the "normal people" leave because of these incidents. If you want everyday people riding the train, you gotta make sure that the poorest people in society aren't so miserable that they

Realistically that doesn't really happen. It's all about land, the building itself is a liability not an asset.

Buddy if you want to convince people to use public transit, saying a little shit is normal is not the way to do it btw I live in Tokyo and moved here explicitly because of public transit.

"About the same" is not the same. I'm sure it's a stressful job, but it's also self imposed. If you're getting paid a CEO salary, you can quit and live off investments after a single year of doing it. It is in

No. Financial stress comes from not being able to meet your basic needs. Everything after that is a choice, and choices are reversible.

The CEO of Walmart doesn't do anything for the Walmart workers, he works for the investors. I would say it would be a huge upgrade to get rid of investor CEOs and put in a worker CEO in place instead.

That literally is already what's happening. Bribing officials through lobbying is legal, and only rich people can afford to take on the instability of an election run. And idk where you got the idea that people don't make minimum

No. There is no financial stress in a CEOs life. The CEO that can't afford private yacht lessons for their daughter is not the same as the single mom working 2 jobs to feed her children. Stop drawing a false equivalency.

Serious question: if every company was working with razor thin margins, and every worker made make minimum wage while investors reap profits from speculation, would that be good?

Like I said, that research is already publicly funded, and even if it wasn't it's always worth it to make sure people live longer as a country because more people means more resources to accomplish stuff with.

The incentive is saving lives. That's what the researchers are in it for. The research is in large part publicly funded. Pharmaceutical companies are just charging rent on top of the discoveries. The best argument you can make is that

No, I don't, because I never said that, because there was never scientific consensus around that. Anyway, I hope you live long enough to see the world burn.

What's a non human source of CO2 emissions that we can reasonably prevent?

▲
by

Well no, but it's either pedantic or meant to mislead. If we're in agreement we need to do something about CO2, then we both know we're talking about human sources of CO2, so why be pedantic?

Most people aren't driving across the country every time they need to go from the east coast to the west coast. If planes didn't exist these trips would also not exist.

No, that's not what I'm describing. Stop putting your ideological spin on my words. The government doesn't need the private sector, it allows the private sector to exist where it's deemed beneficial.

Mate, nobody's writing comprehensive laws in the hacker news comment section. Stop engaging in bad faith. The rest of your comment is also wrong, and I'm sure you know why if you stop to think about it for 30 seconds.

Yes, the entire idea is to refactor our cities and societies so that most people can and do use the low carbon option. It's not commuting 40Km by bicycle, it's raising the price of gas to the point that people choose to live at a

I disagree that you need to be miserable. Humans are very good at getting used to their circumstances, and some of the changes would be net positives on the personal level. I know I'm way happier now that I ride my bicycle as my main m

I guess I meant that what needs to be done is simple, but it can be hard to do. Dropbox wasn't built in a weekend, but it was built.

Ok, but you still have to try because we all agree the alternative is worse right? I didn't mean to say that it's easy, just that it's simple. Simple things can still be hard to accomplish.

You can't take the number outside of its context. We know the earth is warming, that's not up for contention anymore. When you hit a 50 year record high temperature, the implication is that it's only going to get hotter. It&#
