And I'm very happy for you, but I'm not arguing whether you can be happy with children or not. I'm arguing about whether having children is above every other kind of happiness.

And I'm very happy for you. However, what I'm arguing is not "having children makes me happy." It's "having children is above every other kind of happiness." Think about that for a second. What does that s

People in their deathbed also regret working so much but nobody's chomping at the bit to quit their job and become a bum.

You can't have an objective opinion after experiencing both sides either. A child is a life long decision. You don't get to say "oh I was wrong" after a couple years.

My issue is not with the fact that some parents are happy with their decision. My issue is the implication that the joy of parenthood is above every other joy. For comparison, you don't see programmers claiming the joy of programming i

I disagree that there's more joy to parenthood. I think that's a lie parents tell themselves to justify their decision. I'm happy for you if you're happy to have children. That doesn't mean people without children a

The article you linked literally criticizes the Namibia mine for causing ecological damage to the marine ecosystem from repeated trawling. All that for superfluous rocks we can make synthetically. Granted, maybe there are good mines out the

Most people eat meat, asking someone to change their lifestyle is very different from asking them to get a synthetic diamond instead of a natural one. And yeah of course what he thinks matters too. If you're both awful people then you

If you think that just because a mine isn't in Africa that means it's a good place to work then I disagree

Even if it's "clean" relative to worse places, it's still not ethical. Mining is still dangerous work. The workers are still underpaid. The profits are still stolen by companies that are literally the vestiges of Europea

Why do we use high level programming languages? Just train everyone better to write machine code. Heck, if programmers could read binary we wouldn't need languages at all!!!

The point is that perfect information isn't real. Perfect information is the spherical cow in a vacuum of economics. The incentives are such that vendors that lie and cheat do better than the ones that don't.

In Japan, everyone over 40 gets yearly colonoscopies as part of a general health check up. That should be a really good source of data, someone should take a look at that. But what I was getting at is that it can scale.

You're joking but yes. You get to save on rent, and live close to family for longer than most people forced to move out. If you don't have to pay most people's highest expense, you can have a very comfortable life. And since

No, it really isn't. There's a cultural preference in the white USA for "moving out" of your parents house, but that's not universal. Canada is very multicultural, and a lot of people choose to live with their paren
