1) "In all fairness" was clearly a turn of phrase intended to indicate that whilst it was fair point, there was a bigger issue at play. I see nothing wrong with that. 2) Since when is the submitter not allowed to comment? 3) Simply googling

Sure. "more popular = better" within certain contexts.

And I've genuinely heard of none of those :) I was more thinking of music where few people would argue that the Top 40 or top YouTube hits represented the tracks with the most "quality".

To the best of my knowledge, CUDA is Nvidia only. You would need to look at OpenCL or something similar. I guess the techniques presented in the article could be ported to OpenCL.

I quite commonly use it when I want to see an application behind the terminal e.g. I might be editing code in vim whilst the application or browser window is open in the background. Also, it just looks nice! By having an appropriate backgro

The other thing is it's really handy to know vi/vim when you're logged into a remote server and want to quickly edit a file.

Ah, very good! The other interesting point is they use a dictionary that includes number of syllable information that have augmented with words like "Rihanna". Part of me wishes this page had been submitted instead of the top level.

Isn't it just automatically extracting sentences that can be broken into 5, 7, 5 groups of syllables? I don't think anyone has made any attempt to summarise the article. Very interesting though.

Yes, but I think it is far worse in the case of built-ins; it is explicitly obvious that "add" is not part of the language, which is not the case with "+". Admittedly this is much more of a problem for new programmers than experts. To be fa

Considered by people who have used C++ and seen some awful problems creep in because of unnecessary operator overloading. Your last point actually highlights the problem - it is not more reliable because you are assuming what "+" and "*"

I agree. I hesitated on submitting the article as several statements seem a bit uninformed. But it is an interesting article from a notable person.

I remember that. There was an episode where they played a game where they typed in random domain names and bet on whether or not the site existed.

I wouldn't use the word "accomplishment"; you're right - it's a side effect of JavaScript being the only option. But why complicate things with multiple languages if you can use one? Then all developers can understand and edit the codebase.

I agree with your sentiment, but there is still a lot to be said for being able to use the same language on the server and client within a single application. I'm currently investigating ClojureScript for this very reason.

Reminds me of the letter Babbage wrote to Tennyson, correcting his poem: "In your otherwise beautiful poem one verse reads, Every moment dies a man, Every moment one is born If this were true the population of the world would be at a stands

I really wouldn't worry. The worst developers are the ones who simply have no interest in software and/or computing. The "smarter" developers can sometimes be a royal pita to work with. I worked at the University of Edinburgh for a while an

I don't think this is what jgc was saying. The point is that it's foolish to assume you know better than someone, particularly when you are unaware of the background to their decisions. And doubly so when the someone in question is as smart

Actually, I think it's a bit more subtle than that. By using stack traces and debuggers etc, I can come up with a working and correct solution. But, by thinking through the problem at a deeper level I can come up with an improved design whi
