Licensing can get really lame. Amazon has (or at least had) seasons 1, 2, and 4 of a show I watched. I had to go elsewhere to find season 3. I never went back for season 4.

I recently bought a software learning book for the first time in years. It was nice to read from something other than a screen for the first time in years.

Doesn't state approved home schooling (in the USA) usually include aptitude testing at a local school? My impression was that the curriculum was set by the school, and the teaching was done by the parent.

I wrote some Ruby in an interview. It was so terse, I had to explain to the interviewer (who favored Java) what the code did, and why it was linear instead of O(n^2). That was actually kind of fun.

I learn by conversing and hands on experience much more efficiently than I do by listening to a (usually boring) lecture. School was not much fun for me.

I suggest putting Google on your resume, too. Being Google-y is a highly desirable line item on a resums. If you really have to, just explain what happened. Maybe even show the hiring manager this thread on HN. There is a reasonable cha

When I hit a paywall, I just google the article title. Clicking through via the search result usually gives me a paywall experience.

Also, lobbying helps address issues where laws haven't kept up with technology. A friend of mine is a lobbyist for an energy company. During a power outage, they will do robo-calling to customers to survey whether power is out in a gi

If you want to use Microsoft Software, BizSpark is great. I've signed up a couple times for a couple different entrepreneurial endeavors of mine. Super easy. Always free.

I liked having Ruby as a first. The REPL made it easy to see what was going on (even if I didn't understand it), the community's like for testing is fabulous, and I became comfortable doing things at the command line.

Yeah, the downward spiral towards being on the rocks was just as bad, if not worse, than being homeless. Watching your bank account dry up is not fun. Coming to the realization that your friends and family can't, or won't, be ab

The short version is that I got hit pretty hard in 2008 when the economy melted down. I was working as a tech recruiter for startups, and I was being referred around by a few venture capitalists. When the VCs stopped investing, their port

I haven't written about it in detail, no. It's been long enough that it doesn't hurt when I think about it anymore. Maybe I'll jot some words down and share with them y'all.

As a workaround, I can add all of you to my company's GitHub Enterprise install. It's only ~$2,500/year per 10 users, so I can just expense it.

I am affected by my environment. Aren't you? A page full of ads for things that tend to make me feel slightly less optimal is, well, suboptimal.
