Why doesn't other fit? How can there be anything that isn't covered by other?

I agree that it probably won't become a huge success, but I think that if they switch to Android they'll end up with nothing since there's nothing special about the hardware. They'll lose the interest they have now and no one will have a r

It was around before Android so that's one reason why it's not Android based. I think that becoming just another Android device wouldn't be a good business move either, but I don't have any data to back that up.

It seems like that should get harder and harder as the density of disks increases. I wonder how different the ease of recovery is for drives made now compared to when that book was written.

Do you have any sources for this? I've heard about this before but I've never seen any details about how it works.

Do you really want to not care about the work you do? It's nice to be able to come home from work and not worry about work, but I wouldn't want to work on something that I wasn't interested in.

I think people believe that once you buy hardware you should be able to do whatever you want with it.

There are lots of people who just went to college for four years and then got jobs writing code. I didn't keep a track of many of them but none of the ones I know of turned out to be good at it.

They make you pay extra for an unmetered gigabit port, so it seems reasonable that you should be able to use more than the standard bandwidth allocation if you pay for more and if you don't you should be able to use the standard package.

Yes. "For example, you could stream terabytes of data off of a genomic sequencer as it is being created, store the final data set as a single object and then analyze any subset of the data in EC2 using a ranged GET"

The problem with this is that Amazon has so many businesses that almost anything you do could be related the to company's business activities.

Yes, but I think that since the wholesale bandwidth market is more competitive it won't be as much of a problem.

There are also a couple of very small providers who provide really cheap fast connections. If you have access to one of them you can get either 30Mbps symmetric for $40/month or 100Mbps symmetric for $60/month. Hopefully more of these wil

Slide 3 says that power, power distribution, and cooling account for only 31% of the monthly cost. So while power related expenses aren't trivial they're significantly less than the cost of servers. I think land would be counted under oth

Power is not the big expense and neither is land. See http://perspectives.mvdirona.com/2010/10/31/DatacenterNetwor... for a breakdown of expenses.

I think the two big changes are that the nodes have 10Gb network cards and full bisection bandwidth. They're also HVM instead of PVM but I don't know how much that matters for this benchmark.

No. This is complementary to Hadoop. Google's Percolator is a similar system and they say that it's much less efficient. If you don't need continuously updated data then Hadoop is a better choice.
