Finding better models and understanding things at a deeper level is never a lost cause and even if we know that we can't find a complete set of axioms for all existing math theories, we still try to understand math better. For example, the

I still don't think we have grasped the importance of Gödel's incompleteness theorem. For example, indirectly it means that we can't ever solve the halting problem. Personally, I also think it applies to physics, especially the idea to find

The solution I know of is to use Flash as a proxy to copy to the clipboard. I don't think there is a standard way of doing this without going through Flash.

The thing to note about the halting problem is that it's impossible to create a general solution that works for all the input programs. That said, one could create an approximative solution and even solve the halting problem for non-turning

All things don't have to be practical. There's a lot of insight in knowing the theory, because it's the theory that everything is built upon. Knowing something about complexity theory gives one insight into how problems relate to each other

Mozilla is making millions on advertising from Firefox search and I think the same business model can be applied to Ubuntu. For example, by adding a search bar directly on the desktop.

Unlikely that such a complex system does not have any bugs or improvements. Documentation for the project is also _very_ sparse.

Facebook are pretty bad at driving open-source projects. For example: their Cassandra project has had no code commits for the last several months ( http://code.google.com/p/the-cassandra-project/source/list ) While this code and idea shar

Traitor! ;) That said I have used vim for at least 3 years and I have evaluated emacs a few times, but I come crawling back to vim. For me vi is like zen, so simple, yet so complex. Another thing I like about vi is how key bindings make sen

JavaScript also supports obj.id == obj["id"]. Python on the other hand does not support this (which is a shame, because obj.id is more readeable than obj['id']). But it's possible to hack this on dicts ( http://pastie.org/296506 ). Syntac

A thing I have noted is that every time I code in Java I feel handicapped for the lack of proper syntactic sugar for maps (I mostly code in JS/Python where maps are used for _all_ kinds of things (and hacks)). Anyway, great post.

The benchmark is very misleading as it's very cheap to open connections, especially when using non-blocking IO... A good post about real-life performance of different comet frameworks: http://cometdaily.com/2008/03/14/comet-gazing-maturity

I think his way of doing research is the way computer scientists do research. I.e. instead of taking a very complex programming model (like Java's or Haskell's), most CS researchers invent their own mini languages (that in a lot of cases ar

I really can't see the fun in bashing people or their work. Especially not by somebody that produces something that's at least as crappy as the products they bash (the team behind uncov have created pressflip.com).

You may want to include GoogieSpell into it -> http://orangoo.com/labs/GoogieSpell/ It's open-source and you can either use Google or Aspell. I am the author of it.

Lars Bak (head of development for V8) has before made VM's for Self and SmallTalk. Other than that he was the technical lead for Java's HotSpot VM. It's a very interesting approach they have taken, especially with class transitions and comp

The idea is great, the execution (and design) is currently really bad. If I was you I would concentrate on making things more "simple" (or hidden). Maybe make a front page that explains the idea and does not present so much "raw" data.
