Except most immigrants out here in the valley at the very least take the old F1 student > H1B visa route. H1B is practically the only option you have to work in this country regardless of whether you got that PhD at Stanford or came here

It is entirely upto Congress to pass a sensible legislation, which they've been refusing to for a better part of last 8 years.

While getting a new H1B has become statistically impossible given the statutory limits that Congress refuses to revise, there are other visas like the O1 and J-1 that are still possible. We have a couple of guys at my company in San Francis

But what if you want to take a year off? Or just some time off inbetween jobs to travel? AFAIK you need to stay employed with a sponsoring employer all the while. Plus it definitely makes you risk averse as far as doing your thing is conce

In a sense that your employer needs to file a Labor certification application, determine the prevailing wage and ultimately USCIS granting your petition. It takes a while to get it all done.

Many of these applications are probably for a transfer of status implying that the beneficiaries are already on an H1B working for some other employer.

A fair amount of those GC applicants are also the people who came here via consulting companies like Wipro/TCS etc.

Well most American employers do take this very seriously. I've typically been offered salaries well past the prevailing wage.
