You could do topic branches in SVN, it would just be painful. It's sort of like saying "Why use C++? You can do object oriented programming in C with structs and function pointers."

It also wouldn't work. This just reassigns your local copy of argv[0] to a different memory location. Also, in what circumstances can argc be 0?

Ok, but what percentage of software patents are going to be useful in 20 years when they go into the public domain anyway? Doesn't seem like there's a lot of society downside to just keeping them secret vs open but unable to use until 2032.

Ok, but no way to handle the case where it is comprimised? Why use the device id, why not just generate a uuid the first time the app is run? It seems like there are some issues to work out with this scheme, it may be slightly premature t

Are these ids in plaintext in network requests? What if someone at Starbucks snoops my request? What if someone steals/guesses my id while I still have the same device, how do I do the equivalent of resetting my password?

I use vim with the brilliant eclim plugin to write java code on my netbook. http://eclim.org Lets you run eclipse headless and communicate to it through vim to get the fancy IDE stuff like code completion, automatic imports, etc. Best
