I know this may seem like a technical nit-pick, but it wasn't eBay specifically going out of their way to port scan your local machine. It's just that they decided to use one of the many third-party products in the marketplace to

In the 10+ years we've owned our heat pump, we've only ever used it 2 or 3 times for cooling. Here in NZ, heat pumps are really common and are seen as the most efficient form of heating in a house. Gas central heating and log fire

Here in NZ you can go outside for exercise, even if isolating. https://covid19.govt.nz/isolation-and-care/how-to-self-isola...

Google has a habit of offering free services that other companies can't compete with, and then after they've killed off the competition they start charging for the services. Classic example is Google Photos - they killed off a bun

I just blew away my last Windows installation and completed the move to Pop!_OS. I keep a VM running Windows 10 Pro around so I can access Office desktop apps and some Windows-specific software I need, but I spend most of my time in Linux n

In the third ring ("Thermal radiation radius"), my reading of it implies that you have 100% chance of third degree burns. But is that if you are standing outside in the street? I read recently that your chances of survival increas

In my experience, SSO usually means "same sign on", meaning you get to use the same credentials across many different services. That's certainly an improvement over having to create and manage multiple accounts, but I would n

True, but I don't mind. I'm happy getting a new phone with better cameras/battery/etc after two or three years. But kudos to Apple for their longevity - my daughter still has a 1st gen iPhone SE (nearly 6 years old) whic

Not sure why the article describes these as harmless? If one of them parachutes down on to my face, I'm sure I'll die of a heart attack - hopefully a quick death.

My youngest daughter has the original iPhone SE which is the same form factor as the iPhone 5 but runs the latest iOS. This is perfect for her since she's only 11 and this is the only phone that can fit into her pockets. Some of her fr

I still love my S10e! The battery is fading a bit now, but apart from that it's my perfect device - good size, fingerprint sensor on the side, headphone jack, SD card slot (I store my entire music collection on the SD card), and it jus

My daughter has broken 3 of these in the last couple weeks. Also, you can't charge the device and listen to music at the same time (unless you buy that extra dongle).

Yeah, it's all too easy to draw wrong conclusions from this data. Based on your opinions, you could argue that WRX drivers are more likely to drink while driving, or, you could argue that WRX drivers are more likely to be pulled over b

Such sad news. Definitely the greatest leg spinner of all time and one of the best bowlers of all time. I remember watching him bowl in a test series in South Africa in the 90s, and we were all shocked by not only the turn he managed to gen

I like the 96% layouts (100 keys) - similar size to a TKL, but still has the option of using the number pad. I much prefer typing lots of numbers with the number pad, and I'm no accountant or mathematician.

I don't get it either, but I live on the other side of the world to Silicon Valley, so it has no impact on my work life.

I'm firmly in the Logitech camp - I have a bunch of dongles that pair to multiple mice and keyboards across a number of devices. My favourite Logitech keyboard is the K580 ( https://www.logitech.com/en-nz/products&#

I don't know much about Laravel or Symfony, but your error pages show a full stack trace with the source code of the PHP files. Might want to turn that off.

What are you missing out the most on Linux? For me, it's really just the Office apps, everything else I've found works just as well on Linux.

You're not going to convince hardcore Office users (like me) that LibreOffice is good enough. I try it occasionally on my Linux laptop, and I have nothing good to say about it.

Most of my work life has been focused on Microsoft products, so I've been using Windows for a long time as my primary OS. I upgraded to Windows 11 as soon as I could and despite me creating a local account initially, I then linked it t
