I guess I must be a Twitter power user (I'm not really), but I find Twitter 4 to be excellently simplifying for my every-day usage of Twitter. It gives me a timeline. I can quickly post a tweet. It quickly shows me my @ conversations. It sh

Though I understand and largely agree with your argument, the reason why I don't call myself an Engineer is that I know that people may not understand the distinction. I legally cannot call myself a "Professional Engineer". In order to pr

I have a degree in Computer Engineering, but I've never got a PE license either. The important thing is that I don't ever call myself an Engineer . I am a programmer, or developer, or whatever; calling myself an Engineer would be dishonest

I think it's more of a cultural difference. "Engineer" just doesn't mean the same thing south of the border; it means more like "developer", or perhaps "technical employee".

I'm not sure that usage indicates even rough numbers of hackers. Hacking OS code is a bit more daunting than hacking RoR code (at least in popular opinion), therefore I would think that more users of RoR are likely to hack on it. That said,

There's a pretty massive software ecosystem surrounding Flash. Tons and tons of mature libraries for Flash. Not so much for HTML5 (though that will change with mass adoption and time).

It probably depends on how we are defining "learned". Does it mean memorizing all the functions in language x's stdlib? Is it learning the grammar of the language? Is it coding a project of x many lines of code? Have you learned a language

Copyright(s) come in two forms: (1) moral, and (2) economic. You are talking about the moral rights, OP is talking about economic rights. Both are part of copyright law (at least in Canada). Also IANAL.

You may be right to suggest another book as an eager student's introduction to Ruby, but the Poignant Guide is a really awesome book that absolutely deserves a mention. The meandering storyline and its quirky character are part of its charm

I learned to program on modern FOSS computing environments and I must say that I think a simpler, more constrained learning environment would have helped me out a lot. It's obviously dependent on the student's learning style, but having com
