Well, it appears that your earnings from this time are non-monetary, which probably have a higher value that what you'd earn (value and cost being different things).

Within IT I’ve seen something similar to this with contractors and consultants. I used to be a contractor and was paid hourly and many of my fellow contractors considered a day off as spending or losing money, not money that never earned in

The level of food shortage you're talking about is extreme and very unlikely, excepting an extremely unlikely series of major disasters. It would take a lot to overcome people's inertia to action and by that stage of your theoreti

From a non-US perspective, it seems that a lot of Americans are quick to conclude that a civil war is around the corner, even on HN where one would hope for a more nuanced analysis. There can't be that many boogaloo boys on this forum,

This is pretty standard for a takeover process. As the sale is far from complete it’s normally considered safer not to make any changes that could threaten the sale or commit the company to something the new owner doesn’t want.

I think many people have made assumptions about what Musk means when he talks about free speech. I don’t think (and greatly hope) it’s going to be an uncensored free for all, which typically leads to a toxic nightmare. Fingers crossed!

I used to work in an office where colleagues insisted on listening to radio phone-ins and my choice was either headphones or deep hatred & anger towards the ignorant callers. Usual choice was headphones, better for the stress levels!

I don't know what will happen if Musk takes over but I've seen enough platforms disappear to know that their long term longevity is not something I'd bet real money on. Every collapsed empire at one time looked immortal.

I don't have a "side" in this, that kind of division further drives the toxic narratives in US politics and sees the only options as based on force or a civil war. That shows either a lack of imagination or bad faith in seeki

This is false equivalence. There are many things that used to be widespread in the USA but today are non-existent or greatly reduced. Just pointing to examples of different things is not a coherent argument.
