For me (on an iPad), the problem isn't the loading speed, but the interface that blocks/loses the pinch state when rendering new layers. Zooming in/out stops working and you have to restart the pinching gesture to continue.

I'd lean towards a check box with 'make e-mail address visible (to registered users)'. That way you get the implicit message that it's invisible by default and can share it if you like.
