I think the only suspects you can take off the list are oil-importing US client states and the LDCs of the global south. The unipolar moment is over, a Great Game is again afoot.

If you replace 100 lines of my code with 20 lines, God bless you. If you replace 100 lines of my code with 500 lines of buzzword-driven development that is 50% copied off of Stackoverflow, we're going to have a discussion.

So here's what installing Debian was like in 1998. Short of going to a first-tier University AND having a campus job that allowed you near the ethernet jacks, you were either going to spend weeks downloading disk images over your 38.4

Bike lanes exist to get bicycles "out of the way," which is why we have a decades-long alliance between the car-insurance lobby and the sell-bicycles lobby to get bikes off the road and on to facilities. This is a losing strategy

The nice thing about pre-Slack was that there was a bozo filter: the only people who could bother you were the people who could figure out how to use an IRC client.

I tried Matrix last month. It's neat, but slow and a little buggy. Recommending it to anyone other than a Matrix developer right now seems a bit of a stretch.

Without a hint of vitriol: any tech community that wants to use something like Slack is not the kind of tech community I want anything to do with. I'm glad they exist, I'm glad they like that kind of thing, and I'm glad to ne

Considering that the yearly cost of a first-world sysadmin is north of $200k (it's not just salary), finding someone to tend to the database for under $10k is a pretty good deal. Worth remembering: you need to have a team of ~10 people
