If what you want to say is just 2 words then maybe a blog post is a bit overkill.

Among other things I think it's the huge rush I get when I figure out something hard. Can't be beat :) Then there's the satisfaction of imagining a system and slowly putting it together. The exhilaration of a new program. Problem solving at

Funny how people who write articles are what makes a good on their programming blogs often include "writes a programming blog" as one of the attributes a good candidate should have... Hmmm, maybe my comment should read as: "it doesn't perfe

Telemarketing killed landlines? That doesn't seem quite correct... And spam doesn't really seem to have killed email either, you may rarely use it but the rest of the (connected) world does still seem to.

I had the same experience. The first page you see doesn't explain what it's all about except to say advertising and to show a map of the US. From that I immediately think it's about geo targeted online ads.

Seriously, is there really a need to be such a dick about these things? Maybe he's right, maybe the other guy's right, maybe they're both talking about totally different things and just not noticing because they're too busy arguing. There m

Just so no one else has to waste time clicking through, it's just another lame April Fools joke. Actually, I think I might have found this one funny if it hadn't been now when I'm so sick of them :p

That's not the new clause, that's from the BSD license. The new clause is the last one in the list, the one about not removing the license enforcement code.

Damn right, the Internet has really taken all the humor out of April Fools jokes. Pretty much everything has been done to death already and in most cases wasn't all that funny in the first place. Never the less, they're a perfect example of

He works for the Daily Mail. It's a wonder he could even string sentences together let alone understand something as "complex" as that.

My point was that it was an old article hence what he said about the DBF library may have been true at the time. Was that not obvious?

I've seen Duck Duck Go when you posted before and didn't think much of the idea (hey, I can use Wikipedia!) Just had a look again and I now think it's pretty awesome. Just for a really speedy "what the hell is this?" type of query it looks

This looks fun :) I can think of all kinds of fun uses for it already... I wonder why they choose Alex/Happy instead of Parsec though. From my, admittedly limited, viewpoint Parsec looks brilliant for parsers that can be reused and combined

Cool to hear that things are moving on. I'm expecting great things from PyPy :) Psyco is pretty cool right now, even without generator support (though that would be good). I'm doing stuff with a neural net built in Python/Numpy right now an

I don't think it's really an either/or choice. You can have loads of forks on Github but still have a central place for those who just want to download code. I think the really cool thing about Github is that it makes it easy to experiment

But the article is suggesting just copying cookies from Firefox into a simple Java based scraper. That won't support Javascript either. If you needed Javascript you could use one of the Firefox scripting bridges (Selenium or MozRepl).

Agreed, this more of a "how to scrape data from sites you can log into". It's not even a very useful example at that. For anyone who wants to scrape sites that require login I'd recomend Python with Twill. That lets you do the whole thing w

Thanks, I saw the article on that a few days ago here and it looks really interesting. Is it really right that I could just use that to automatically recreate the entire backprop algorithm? Is it likely to be reasonable in its performance?

With Javascript (AJAX) it wouldn't be, but with a little Java or Flash it is. (I'm not 100% sure on Flash, but I bet it's possible) I think Facebook uses Java for this bit (not totally sure, and I don't want to have to log in just to check)
