I use my own machine. That and you have to keep in mind a few things. Does the company actually have the money to spend to go after a developer who made some simple app? Would doing so piss off their entire engineering department? Is it rea

Why would you quit your job to make an app? I have bootstrapped 3 apps and pushed them to the app store in my own time. To be fair, every time I do it, it's hard. I have to prepare my family that I'm undertaking something that wil

Great, I'll reach out to you. I've used careercup a few times, primarily for resume review. I've had mixed results though. Appreciate the feedback.

I've actually seen your posts before and know about your service. I'd love to check it out but, I'm out of state :-( I'm honestly surprised there isn't a service where I can just do a google hangout with someone to

I'm sure Basecamp is going to be thrilled about this. It's ironic since google is the antithesis of all that is preached in Rework.

You could look at working remotely. You could still stay in tech but also live a healthy lifestyle.

Well not every job is well suited for remote work. As a developer, you know if they're not cranking out code. You miss sprint goals. Sprint demoes are a disaster. You don't see commits. When QA or design work from home, it'

This would make me anxious. I remember reading about someone who learned from 23andMe that they had a terminal disease or something like that, and it drastically altered their life. I'd rather just live in ignorance.

Is this Reddit trying to take itself more seriously? It's almost like a mask layer to obfuscate the hive mind. I'm curious how the content is created, how something is featured, etc.

That's silly. I work on a multitude of apps that have huge customer bases. Obviously no where near Facebook but, definitely a couple million users. The largest app has maybe 200K lines of code? And we are always able to find sections

That's a pretty small app. Sure, it's ready for smaller apps but, things aren't so great on larger scale apps.

Why shouldn't they at least be capable of making that much? I'm not saying all, but some, sure, why not? Friend of mine leads a team that has a 30 million dollar contract with a government client. It's a team of 5 or 6 I beli

Uh, I wouldn't say salaries are inflated right now at all. As the other commenter said, doctors and lawyers still grossly outpace software engineers. For whatever reason, I've noticed engineer pay plateaus around 120-150K, which i

Hm, interesting. The HN thread doesn't seem to propose many solutions. Is this something a new modem would fix? Time Warner gave me a (very large and unattractive) modem. I have an old-ish Apple wireless router plugged into it.

I'm still of the opinion that you should drop a good amount on your keyboard. It's your hands/wrists. You only get two of them. Once they go, you can kiss your software development career goodbye. The initial sticker price wi

I use a Kinesis Advantage. I have two of them actually, one for home use, and the other as at the office. I honestly would not have a job without them. I destroyed my wrists on that crappy Apple keyboard. It's awful for your wrists a
