I bought a couple of items there and they were great deals. Tried buying a third item and it never showed and the seller said to wait a bit longer and eventually it went over the time limit to get a refund. Seller didn’t respond after that,

There's something oddly satisfying about writing individual characters inside boxes. When I watched the video in the post where it converted the written text to characters, my immediate thought was that I wished those characters lined

I read that apology as well and came away with a different opinion from what the post title wants you to think. This seems like a very interesting branding approach on his part. Play up allegations and subsequent firing as being "cance

I got a similar feeling when Amazon once reached out to me. I got a recruiter email and I wasn't super interested in working there, but was a little curious, so I responded. They wouldn't tell me what project it was or what I woul

Heh, I remember those. I had my first internship around that time and one of the made-up jobs my boss at the time had me do was look into those switches. Another intern told me he just wanted someone to look into it since he wanted to try u

I was surprised to not find any X10 ads in there, but I guess they just never did small GIFs. Some of their examples from back in the day http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~kuan/x10.html

Yeah, it's not like they put together this entire business and then afterwards realized they'd have to pony up money to Apple. If they didn't know up front, that's not great business planning.

I think it really depends on how idealistic you are. I don't think I'll ever find a job that satisfies me completely. I just have too many creative ideas that don't fit neatly into a regular dev job. I've also found that

I agree. It's not so much "saving time" as when you are in a state of flow, you want to remove anything that slows you down from converting what's in your head to code. I notice that when I am totally in the zone, I star

After many years of using different tools to keep track of tasks, I ended up with a very simple system: a markdown journal for what I do every day. Whenever I have a task that I need to complete that day, I add an entry in the current day&#

Speaking purely as someone who was using Objective-C before on Mac and iOS apps, it's incredibly productive. I can convert ideas into code very efficiently as the language allows you to be concise. How it compares to other modern langu

No idea. I've seen it behave this way for at least the past year. I just tried it on a different Mac and it behaves similarly, except this other Mac causes QT to open up the File Open dialog immediately on launch. (Version 10.5 of Quic

Did you open and play back a video first? If you just open QuickTime Player and don't interact with it, it does stay open if you switch apps. If you open a video, then close it, the app closes if you switch to a different app. I just t

I think I'm biased because I've been working in their ecosystem for a decade now, but I absolutely agree. I think they've done a generally good job of updating and deprecating APIs. The designs for their common UI components

There is one example of really bad app behavior when the last window is closed and it's one that Apple makes themselves: QuickTime Player. If you open up QuickTime Player and then play back a video, then close the video, as soon as you

Ah, my mistake. I misread your comment since you mentioned generally "experienced users" and then mentioned specific macOS details that might be confusing for experienced Windows users. I see now what you meant.

I think you mean “experienced Windows user using macOS”. What you describe are consistent design choices on the Mac. If you flipped things around and only knew Macs and went to Windows, you might be surprised that closing a window there exi

I was thinking about this recently. Loving to code and getting better at designing and implementing code only goes so far in the industry. To really "level up" you have to learn a whole bunch of other things related to project man

I've found the same thing. I love working on projects in my spare time, a lot of them completely pointless, but fun. I've seen the reactions you describe and it feels like talking to an alien. I've learned as well that not ev

Not quite the same, but this is like me walking down the stairs and becoming conscious of my walking. I end up overthinking my steps and have to go more slowly otherwise I risk missing a step and falling.

I don't think you'll ever know off the bat if an idea is worth doing. A lot of ideas sound good to you, but there are so many unknowns, like whether you have a suitable audience and whether there's a good ROI. As an exercise,

Fun little game. I was actually wondering today, is there a good website out there that parodies modern webpages really well, with “please subscribe for updates”, little prompts from bots to chat, and other things like that?

I think you’re on the right track about it being more fragile with a hole. Probably with wear and tear over time it might break apart. Much easier for Apple to “outsource” responsibility of attaching it to things and dealing with durability

Oh, I remember this. I wonder how much of it was they came up with the design quickly and realized they had a lot of time and money left, so they got to work on the justification process that we see here.
