Seconded. They based Tony Stark in the new Iron Man movies on this guy. I think I'm doing important work, then I read his wikipedia entry and weep at my insignificance.

For anyone interested in the idea of humans colonizing Mars, I can thoroughly recommend Kim Stanley Robinsons Mars Trilogy (starting with Red Mars). It's a great future history of how we might end up there and what it would take for us to f

I don't want to belabour this point too much, but yes. The conversation does not look like this: "Hey guys, I have 10 years of experience doing consulting, my rates are $3000 / hour, hire me for two weeks and to improve your conversion." Ac

Hi Patrick, As someone who's just starting down the road that people like you have paved, I can't express enough thanks for showing us that a) it's possible and b) that it's OK to not want what everyone else does (i.e. full-time employment

I think that if you're really keen to get a position, it's worth following up. People are busy, you get the wrong email address, there are a dozen reasons why your application may not have got to the person it needs to for the hiring proces

Interesting you mention Voyager I. Last I read it's going to enter the interstellar medium sometime between now and 2015, the first man made object to do so. To me that's totally mindblowing. It's an amazing time in the history of homo sapi

Agreed, I think Ubuntu is still a great distro for 'just working' on most machines I've installed it on. I dislike Unity too, so I install a couple of packages, grab my xmonad config file from github and get back to work.

For a long time I experimented with PHP frameworks to see if I could capture the rails magic, but so much of it has nothing to do with the code/API itself (and more to do with the culture and community around the technologies). I'm now a fu

I seem to have naturally gravitated towards this since I enjoy playing games and simultaneously feel like I should be doing something better with my time. Additionally, if I don't personally rate a game as more than '90%' I trade it in.
