Tokyo is a big place. Living in Ebisu is worlds apart from living in Itabashi for example, but you'll need a bank balance to match.

Yes please! I've been trying to crack this particular nut for nigh on half a decade and still haven't made much headway, so it would be great to read about how you managed it.

Totally. Especially since the endgame in any web-facing EC2 architecture is to have stateless nodes behind a load balancer that you can scale up and down as required. Ideally you'd automatically recreate AMI snapshots whenever your code cha

If I'm not mistaken, Heroku runs on EC2, so you're already full-hog on AWS.

Sympathize entirely with your situation, been there before many times. However putting up with this sort of environment for more than a few weeks in the current market for dev work is completely incomprehensible to me. Everyone is hiring, a

Agree with this on multiple levels, though in practice I find a lot of codebases where views directly call events on passed-in model objects. In simple applications I find the extra level of indirection isn't worth it. I put together some s

Great recommendation! I've been programming to http://soundcloud.com/jaytechmusic a lot recently. 2 hours of buttery biscuit bass delivered monthly every month for the past four years.

As a ruby developer I may not be that well qualified to ask about this but can you give me an example where you've had this difficulty? It would be good to know in case there's some low-hanging fruit in documentation that would make new rub

I'd agree. One of my big laments as a ruby developer is that the minute you step outside web development, pythons libraries kick the crap out of rubys, in comprehensiveness and maturity. See nltk and scipy.

I'd like to know patio11's opinion on this too, but for me, networking face-to-face with non-technical business people has done a lot to show me how valuable the basic knowledge I _do_ have is. Though you may not think you know much about S

While I'm perfectly happy with the stock git porcelein commands (and generally don't like any attempts at simplifying them, including gui tools) other developers having a different workflow isn't the reason. I think having shortcuts and wra

+1 to this. I accept that the pg-anointed wisdom is that single-founders are less likely to be successful, but I wouldn't take advice like that as dogma. Assuming it's true 'because Paul said so' is a little weak.
